Fourth Grade

Fourth Grade

Daily Schedule and Information

8:00 – 9:30 Reading / Spelling

The students will be reading a variety of books this year. We will read stories from our literature books, short stories, and novels. Our topics include tall tales, adventure, historical fiction, mysteries, biographies, and non-fiction selections. We will discuss the reading and complete written work about the stories and books. Our reading series has several interesting units for fourth grade. We will help the students use phonics and word structure strategies to sound out words, and we will teach the students to use comprehension strategies to better understand and comprehend the reading.

Spelling lists will contain words that are used frequently in writing and lists that help the students learn spelling patterns, word structure, and rules. The children will be tested on the high frequency words they learned last year and will continue to learn this year. Our goal is for the students to learn the words and then spell the words correctly in daily writing. A new spelling list will be sent home each Monday. We take our weekly spelling tests on Friday. Your child’s spelling grade will be based on the weekly test and daily written assignments.

9:30 – 10:15 Bronco Time

This year intervention time has been changed to Bronco Time. We have placed this time before or after your child’s Special’s time (music, art, P.E. and computers). During Bronco Time the students will be receiving interventions for reading and math, some will be working on their reading skills using the program “Reading Counts”, and we will include some research activities, math and reading activities too. The teachers will be working with our para’s to ensure that the activities are meeting the needs of our students.

10:15 – 11:00 Art, Computer Lab, Music, P.E.

The children attend Art, Computer Lab, Music, and P.E. on a rotation schedule.

11:00 – 11:55 Writing / Language Arts

During writing the students will be asked to write about assigned topics as well as topics they choose. We will develop writing skills based on our new program, “Writing Alive”. We will work on proofreading skills and how to use correct grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.

11:55 – 12:40 Recess and Lunch

The children will go to lunch from 11:55 – 12:20. Recess will follow from 12:20 – 12:40.

12:40 – 1:50 Math

In math this year students will practice multiplication and division to solve problems. We will continue to review addition and subtraction. It is important that the students study and learn math facts. Knowing the facts increases their ability to solve problems quickly. The math units we will study include: Place Value and Numeration, Graphing, Probability, Geometry, Measurement, Fractions, Decimals, Patterns, Multiplication, and Division. Problem Solving is an important skill, which will be taught in each unit.

1:50 – 2:05 Recess

Magnets and Electricity

Mrs. Gilliland Geography of Colorado

The Solar System
