WEBSITE EVALUTATION LESSON PLAN (5th Grade)

Objectives:

• Students will understand that not all information they find on the Internet is true.

• Students will understand why it is important to evaluate websites before using the information in them.

• Students will be able to evaluate websites on their own for credibility, reliability, authenticity, objectivity, currency, and purpose.

Standards:

• AASL Information Literacy Standards:

o Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions.

o Evaluate information found in selected sources on the basis of accuracy, validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and cultural context.

o Demonstrate confidence and self direction by making independent choices in the selection of resources and information.

o Maintain a critical stance by questioning the validity and accuracy of all information

• National Educational Technology Standards:

o Use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources.

o Research and evaluate the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, comprehensiveness, and bias of electronic information sources concerning real world problems.

Outline:

• Step One (15 Minutes): Discussion/lecture about website evaluation.

o Go over the definition of evaluation, the importance of evaluating websites, and things to look for when evaluating a website.

o Materials: PowerPoint presentation and “5 W’s Handout”

• Step Two (15 Minutes):

o Have students divide into groups of two and evaluate a selected website designed for this purpose

o Materials: and “Website Evaluation Form”

• Step Three (10 Minutes):

o Go over “Website Evaluation Form” as a class, explain the hoax, re-emphasize the importance of evaluating all Internet sources
