Welcome to 4th Grade

Welcome to 4th Grade!Ms. Carver2015-2016Classroom HandbookAcademy for Business & Technology ElementaryDear families,Summer has finally come to an end and it’s that time of year again-back to school! My name is Ms. Carver and I will be your child’s fourth grade teacher this year. This is my fourth year at ABT Elementary and I am looking forward to the opportunity to get to know you! I truly believe that a successful school year includes participation and dedication from you as parents and guardians, as well as from the students and myself. It is essential for you to be committed to helping your child succeed and to show them the value of their education. Communication is key! Please come to me as soon as possible with any concerns, misunderstandings, or questions that you may have. There will be weekly missing work slips sent home in your child’s Friday Folder. Also, each day your child will be bringing home their School Planner. This is not only a way for you to see what homework your child has each day (it should be circled), but it also shows their daily behavior as well as any notes that need to be communicated. Please take the time to look over this information each day/week. This will help to address any concerns, both behavioral and academic, before they become larger issues. This classroom handbook is designed to go over the basic rules, procedures and important information necessary for our classroom to be a success. Please review this handbook in detail, sign the consent form, and return to school by Friday, September 11th. Keep this packet as a reference; it will also be available on our class website for you to refer to throughout the school year. If you need to contact me for any reason, it is easiest to reach me via email, as I check it several times throughout the school day. My email address is Alicia.carver@. You may also leave a message with the school at 313-581-2223 and I will get back with you as soon as possible. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support. ABTE Vision: Academic Success For All !Homework/Grading Policy – ABTE uses the KC4 Curriculum, which is entirely based on the Michigan and Common Core Standards. Students will be graded according to class work, test & quizzes, homework, and KC4 assessments. Homework is not given on a daily basis. However, any work not finished in class is considered homework! Studies have shown that students should receive; i.e. 10 minutes x grade level =30 minutes each evening. Homework is given based on what was learned during the day. If no homework is assigned, students should spend that time reading or practicing math facts. Assignments are to be turned in the next morning unless otherwise directed. If students do not turn homework in, it is a 0 (zero) in the grade book. This is a school policy! Please understand that grades WILL BE affected. Missing work slips will be sent home in Friday Folders! Grading Scale 100% - 90%= A89% - 80%= B79% - 70% = C69% - 60%= D59% - below = ENew classroom policy-Late work will only be accepted 2 weeks after the date it was assigned. After that time, it will be a 0 in the grade book!Agendas (Planners)- Students will be using an agenda book for homework assignments, daily messages and behavior. This allows children to get organized and reduces the amount of forgotten homework. It is also a way for us to communicate on a daily basis if necessary. Your child is responsible for writing all homework assignments in the agenda, taking the agenda home each day, having a parent read and sign it nightly. They are also responsible for bringing it back to school the next day. Please feel free to write any messages in the agenda to me as well. Absent Work- Assignments will be recorded daily and kept in the classroom agenda. It is the student’s responsibility to check the agenda and record the work they missed and collect worksheets. According to the school code of conduct, students have two days to make up work for every one day of school missed. Friday Folder- Every Friday, or the last day of the week, your child will be bringing home their Friday folder. This folder will include a missing work slip and any graded assignments or important handouts from the week. Please be sure to discuss your child’s behavior, missing assignments and grades with them. They are required to return their empty folder and signed missing work slip to school on Monday morning. If you have any concerns or questions, please let me know by writing a note in their folder. Holidays/Birthdays - We celebrate all holidays in this classroom so students learn about diverse cultures and backgrounds. If you do not wish your child participate in holiday activities, please let me know beforehand. If you would like to bring something in for your child’s birthday, you are more than welcome. Please inform me at least a day prior to the birthday so I can plan accordingly.Classroom Discipline/Expectations/Rewards- I believe that ALL students can learn if given the opportunity in a safe learning environment. The students are the main focus of the ABT community. As citizens of the community, there are rules and procedures in place for ALL of the students in the classroom to follow. Students are expected to follow the following rules/goals:Be respectfulBe responsibleBe safeBe caringThere are consequences in place if a student chooses not to follow the rules. Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is the school wide behavior management system. This system is simple, easy to understand and color-coded. On a classroom chart, each student begins their day on Green and will be required to flip their card if a rule is broken. This chart will make students aware of their behavior and help them self-monitor. The students will record their color for the day in their planners. The colors and consequences are:-Green: super student!-Yellow: warning, improper behavior, loss of recess time-Red: think sheet, call home, loss of privileges. If the inappropriate behavior continues, an office referral will be made. There are also opportunities for rewards for those that choose to follow the rules. I am a believer of positive behavior should be rewarded. I provide students with many opportunities during each day to earn rewards. A few examples that will be used in the classroom are:Caught Being Good Tickets- Tickets will be passed out randomly to students doing the right thing. At the end of each week, tickets will be drawn and the winning students will receive a Homework Pass!Whole Class Rewards-The class can earn marbles when everyone is on task or working especially hard. They also get 10 marbles for an earned compliments from staff members during the day.Group Rewards- It is extremely important that students learn cooperation and problem-solving skills at an early age. In order to help facilitate this, groups can earn points when everyone in their station is on task, working quietly and getting along with one another. Once the reward sheet is full, the group decides on a reward such as free time, lunch with the teacher, etc. After reading the handbook and discussing it with your child please sign below. Also, please complete the Family Contact Sheet to ensure open and easy communication throughout the school year. Thank you I have read and understand the Parent Handbook and discussed the necessary content with my child.Parent/ Guardian Signature _____________________________________________Child’s Name_______________________ Child Signature _____________________Date _________________Comments____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Family Contact SheetStudent Name: __________________________________________ # _________Parents/Guardians Name:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Phone Number:______________________________________________________________________E-mail Address: ______________________________________________________________________Additional Information (allergies, medication, etc.)____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ................
