Basic Needs

According to William Glasser, (1998) all behaviour is used to acquire an outcome that satisfies one's Basic Needs (5 genetically endowed needs). Typically, such behaviour is emitted when one perceives an incongruity between one's real experienced world and one's ideal world (or "Quality World"). In effect, this psychological model proposes how and why people behave the way they do and states that throughout life, a person's behaviour is always purposeful, i.e., to meet one of the innate Basic Needs. Therefore, exploring one's Basic Needs can help to enhance meeting needs, alleviate pain, improve mental health, change behaviour, become more self-aware, and achieve growth within oneself, relationships, etc. Furthermore, exploring needs can be catalytic for therapeutic discussion/focal points. The Basic Needs are:

1. Survival; Beyond eating and breathing, survival includes feeling secure and safe. For some people, this may mean being prepared for unexpected events, not taking risks, taking care of their health, exchanging lots of love and affection, maintaining status quo, planning for the future, and working hard at a job.

2. Love and belonging; Personal love and intimacy, concern about the wellbeing of others, getting to know new people, closeness with friends or those whom we love, feeling comfortable at home, relating well with people and they with you, satisfying relationships are all aspects of love and belonging.

3. Power or achievement; Power takes many forms such as having wealth, prestige, respect, and recognition from others, talking and being listened to, being taken seriously, enjoyment of competition and especially winning, and a fear of showing vulnerability. Achieving and being recognised for achievements is important to someone with a high need for power.

4. Freedom; This may include the freedom to pursue different interests and encouragement from your partner to do so, resistance to being told what to do, desire to live your own life in your own way, willingness to take responsibility for your life, and open-mindedness.

5. Fun; The need for play, for pleasurable activity, learning new things, creative activity, enjoyment of a sense of humour, the ability to laugh at yourself, spontaneity, and a positive outlook on life are all a part of fun.
