Directions:

Write each response as a 2 paragraph letter to your teacher, Ms. Cavrell-Epstein.

Choose only 2 out of the following 5 reading response assignments.

This quarter, your 3 R.R. entries will count as a test. Please edit, revise and proof read your responses.

Typing responses 1-4 is required. Please use 14 font and double space.

Note: These assignments should be completed by Friday May 8, 2015.

A 3rd entry will be assigned upon class completion of the novel Freak the Mighty.

1. Among the Hidden* 2 Paragraphs – Text to World Connection. Paragraph one – describe an event or situation in the novel that stood out to you. Paragraph two – write about a text to world connection you can make between the event in the novel and a real world event it reminds you of. (ex: population control in China, Soweto Uprising in South Africa, WWII etc.)

2. Among the Hidden* 2 Paragraphs - Irony. Paragraph one – describe at least one situation of irony in Among the Hidden. Paragraph two – make a personal connection to this example of irony citing either an ironic situation you have experienced yourself or an example of irony you have heard of. For both paragraphs, make sure to really spell out clearly why the situation was ironic.

Use the following stem sentences to help you:

The reason why is ________________________________________________.

So, it was ironic that _________________________________ (happened) because it is the opposite of what we would naturally expect.

3. Among the Hidden* 2 Paragraphs – Conflict. Paragraph one- Summarize the novel as a person vs. society conflict. Paragraph two- Describe any other conflict you noticed in the novel. (could be another person vs. society conflict, a person vs. person, person vs. nature or person vs. self conflict.)

4. Among the Hidden* 2 Paragraphs -Text to World Connection/Compare & Contrast. Describe the similarities and differences between the novel Among the Hidden and the claymation film Chicken Run. Write one paragraph about at least one similarity and one paragraph about at least one difference. Make sure to include details from both the novel and the film for each similarity and difference discussed.

You may choose to:

Compare and contrast the leadership style of the protagonist Jen from the dystopian fiction novel Among the Hidden with the protagonist Ginger from the Claymation film Chicken Run.*

Or, you may choose to:

Compare and contrast Jen’s leadership style with that of a protagonist from another social justice novel such as The Hunger Games or Divergent etc.

5. Complete a T-Chart on an Independent Reading Book – See Reading Response Notebook for directions on how to complete a T-Chart.

*Letters may be written about Among the Hidden or another social justice novel assigned in class.
