Project Theme Park - Bellard & Randall's Fantastic Fifth Grade

Project Theme Park!

After reading several different books in 5th grade this year with our 40 book challenge, including several genres, it’s your turn to design a theme park that represents your favorite story elements!

First, choose a favorite genre ________________________

Next, choose favorite books/short stories that represent that genre

________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________

Authors __________________________________________________

List characters, settings, and details of the stories that you chose _______ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________

Now for the fun part! How could you incorporate these themes into a park? It’s up to you! It can be anything from a water park to the State Fair of _________.

Use the following rubric to help you get organized:

Park Setting (and name of park) must reflect genre 10 ________

*where in the world would you put it and why? What music would play? What would the landscape look like? How much would a ticket cost to get in? What time period would this be?

At least 5 Theme rides/attractions to reflect story elements 25 ________

*antagonist, protagonist, flashback, foreshadow, character motivations, conflicts of literature, plot, problem resolutions, etc…

Food available in park reflects Books/Stories/Characters/Details 10 ________

*”Freak’s Frenchfry booth”, Odyssey doughnuts, etc…

Souvenirs to support theme 5 ________

Map of Park (symbolism in legend) 10 ________

Park Tokens/money design (symbolism/main idea) 10 ________

Brochure to promote your park (write summary in 1st person)

Folder organization 20 ________

*Page dedicated for each of the following: map (foldout), 5 rides (one on each page with a picture and explanation),

Food page, souvenir page with prices, setting and explanation of park page, and brochure to promote the park)

Vocabulary incorportation 10 ________

*Use all terms in the literary vocab list (Please know that it is more important to show how the word was actually used in this project, not just quoted. For example: Do not use “Antagonist Ally” for a ride name, use something like “Nazi Endings” instead. USE the words, do not just quote them without using examples)

TOTAL ______

Have fun!

Genre – type of literary work EX: mystery, poem, realistic fiction, non-fiction, historical fiction, myth, legend, tall-tale…

Plot – how the conflict is played out. Rising action with a problem, then a solution or solutions to the problem

EX: Number the Stars: two girls and their families, one Jewish and one not, deal with Nazi occupation in Denmark. The non-Jewish family, especially the young girl, has to show bravery by dealing with soldiers in order to help save the Jewish family and help them escape to Sweden. **This shows the problem and the solution**

Foreshadowing – a clue of what will happen later in the story or giving a hint to what a character will be like later

EX: The Soothsayer to Julius Caesar, “Beware the Ides of March” (because something bad will happen on that day)

Flashback – remembering something from the past

EX: Paul remembers things about his past and the incident with his eyes

Climax – highest action of the story/ you know that the resolution is coming next

EX: From Tangerine - When Luis’ brother goes into the gym to confront Erik at the football banquet and a fight breaks out.

Conflict –

Man vs. man –Erik and Paul in Tangerine, or a typical Superman episode (against the “bad guy”)

Man vs. himself – to some extent, Cast Away dealt with this when the main character has to better himself to get off the island (can also be considered Man Vs. Nature) Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz has to realize that there is “No Place Like Home”

Man vs. nature – Brian’s Winter and Hatchet, The Perfect Storm

Man vs. society - In My Fair Lady, Liza Doolittle wants to “better” herself to fit into an upper class society. Also, Scarlet Ohara, in Gone with the Wind, struggles with the effects of the Civil War.

Resolution – solution to the conflict. EX: Paul confronts his parents about how Erik has treated him

Protagonist – main character EX: Annemarie, Odysseus, Paul

Antagonist – character or force that opposes the protagonist EX: Nazis, gods and Cyclops, Erik

First person point of view – narrator is part of the story. He/she is there

Third person point of view – narrator is not a part of the story, just retelling it

Irony - the contrast between what is expected or what appears to be and what actually is

EX: dying right after winning a huge lottery

Tone – when you can tell how the AUTHOR feels about the subject he/she is writing about

EX: Tom was a very weird kid because he was into bugs and other crawly things! That’s gross!

Mood – how a piece of writing makes you feel as YOU read it

EX: walking up to the gray, run down house, I could hear the thunder echoing all around me. (This is written so that you might feel nervous reading more of this type of story)

Style – distinct writing that sets an author apart from other authors – use of words/imagery/genres…

EX: Steven King (It, The Shining, Pet Cemetery) has a different writing style than Lois Lowry (Number the Stars and the Giver)

Theme – what the main character learns in the story – sometimes, the moral

EX: Theme of Number the Stars – bravery and what it takes to be a true friend

Figurative Language –

Simile – comparison using the words like or as EX: Lazy as a dog

Metaphor – comparison of two generally unlike things EX: You are a stubborn bear!

Alliteration – similar sounds repeated for effect EX: Wide-eyed, little skittle or lovely lake

Personification – human like qualities applied to something that isn’t human EX: That car really hums!

Hyperbole (hi-per-bo-lee) – exaggerated language EX: I have told you a thousand times!

Symbolism – using symbols to supply more meaning to a story – the symbols mean more than the obvious

EX: Smiley face = happy, skull/crossbones = death or poison

Imagery – using the five senses to convey more meaning to the story

EX: Grandma’s house was a little gingerbread house that smelled like sugar cookies and peppermints. Walking closer, I heard the wind rustling through the trees and felt it gently blow my hair. I knew in a few moments that I would be safe.

It is alright to split up responsibilities on this project, but the idea is for everyone to learn the vocabulary and how to apply it. When presenting, all members will be called on for explanations.

Brainstorming:

This is not to be turned in, but will help you and your group narrow topics and to show idea strands.
