5th Grade Math

Dear Families of P.S. 111 5th graders,

Welcome to Fifth Grade at P.S. 111! I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with you and your child this school year as they are preparing to become middle school students. In an effort to help with that process, the 5th grade at P.S. 111 is departmentalized. Your child will have different teachers for many of their subject areas. I will be their mathematics teacher. I have been a NYC math teacher for 10 years and this is my 7th year at P.S. 111.

Fifth grade math is an incredible journey. I will try my best to make this year of learning exciting as we focus on problem solving, understanding the place value system, perform operations with decimals and fractions, and begin to build our understanding of geometry as it applies to volume. In an effort to improve number sense and build fluency, efficiency, and flexibility with numbers students will take part in number talks. Your student will be challenged to think for themselves and discuss their strategies for problem solving with their peers. Students will be expected to lead discussions and decide whether or not they have come to reasonable solutions without much teacher input. As the teacher in the classroom my role will be to facilitate these discussions through questioning rather than simply telling and explaining.

To ensure a productive year so that our 5th graders can complete this journey I have established a set of rules, consequences, and procedures. In my classroom there will be 5 rules:

1. Respect yourself and others

1. Raise your hand before you speak

1. Follow directions the first time

1. Ask before leaving your seat

1. Do your best work

If a student chooses to break one of these rules he or she is subject to the following consequences:

1. Verbal Warning

1. Change of Seat

1. Teacher’s Choice

1. Parent Contact/Phone call home

*Lunch detention can be assigned at any time at the discretion of the teacher. This will more than likely be the consequence if a student has displayed a 4th example of misbehavior.*

All serious offenses will result in an immediate call home to parents and consequences that are mandated by the NYC department of education.

Consequences are not always negative and class dojo will allow me to keep track of the positive things your child does on a daily basis and in real time. Students will be awarded points for things such as being on task and helping others. I will be tracking student behavior with a website called Class Dojo. Class Dojo is also an app that can be downloaded to your phone and can be interactive for you and your child. Specific log on information will be forthcoming. I will also further discuss class dojo and how it works at the first open house of the school year, until then you are more than welcomed to familiarize yourself with the website as well as the app. Your child should also be able to explain to you what class dojo is and how it works after the first few weeks of school.

A supply list for the 5th grade was posted to the schools website. I will repost this list to my personal website msconnerly.. I ask again that parents send in facial/nose tissue, hand soap, hand sanitizer, and Clorox wipes to support keeping the classroom as sanitary as possible.

I have high expectations for each of your children. I will do all that I can to help them be successful in meeting those expectations. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me. I look forward to working with you. This is going to be a productive year!
