These titles are NOT required reading, just some suggestions for 6th graders to accomplish their reading goal of 25 books.

Time Warp Trio series by Scieszka

Fun, lots of up-beat dialog, about 3 boys who travel through time using a Magic Book. These are short and easy to read.

This author has written many titles about survival.

(The first 3 titles are about a teen who must learn how to survive in the Alaskan wilderness with only a hatchet)

(The following 5 titles are about a young teen boy in 1845. In the first book, he is separated from his family’s wagon train, captured by Indians, and then rescued by a mountain man. The books are fast moving and about 100 pages)

Time of the Witch (Laura tells an old woman of her wish that her parents were together again without realizing that she is actually talking to a witch)

Summer of the Swans (a teenage girl gains new insight into herself when her mentally retarded brother gets lost)

House of Wings ( left with his grandfather until his parents are settled in Detroit, Sammy learns to respect and love the old man as they care for an injured crane)

Trouble River (a thrilling historical adventure about young Dewey and his feisty grandmother fighting for their lives on a river raft)

Anything by this author is quality literature.

The Poppy series are animal fables about a deer mouse and forest friends. Although they sound like they are for young children, they are excellent for 5th or 6th graders.

Lucy Maude Montgomery This is the classic series of Anne Shirley and her life on Prince Edwards Island (Nova Scotia). It was written in 1908, but was recently a series on PBS.
