Parents and Guardians of Fifth Graders moving on to Sixth Grade,

We have had another successful year at Deer Crossing Elementary School. Throughout the year we have discovered, developed, and mastered many new skills. In order to ensure that all of your child’s hard work is evident when s/he enters middle school, the fifth grade team would like to share a few helpful web sites and suggestions that would build an educational bridge from elementary school to middle school.

Summer Reading Ideas:

One way for students to prepare themselves for middle school is to continue to read throughout the summer. The Frederick County Public Library (FCPL) has lots of wonderful books, and students are often amazed that it’s free! FCPL also has a summer reading club that all students at Deer Crossing can participate in. Want a little more information about FCPL? Go to their website at . The main objective is to keep students motivated about reading. Maybe you and your child could establish reading goals at the beginning of the summer to motivate one another to read.

• Prepare for middle school Language skills by checking out this website. They can practice 5th and 6th grade skills!

Summer Strategies for Math:

Something else we have been working hard on all year is mathematics. Math fact fluency, or how fast a student can correctly answer a multiplication or division problem, is an important skill that needs to be mastered to be successful in middle school mathematics. Continuing to practice math facts during summer months is not as difficult as it may sound. You can practice random facts during a car ride, meal time, even right before bed. It’s important that students continue to practice other math skills from the fifth grade as well. There are many more wonderful websites for math and even science on the DCES website! Be sure to check them out by accessing the Parent and Student link and choosing Website Resources for Students Grade 5.

Check out these websites for some math practice!

It is our intention for this letter to help ensure success in sixth grade from the start of the year. It would be a shame if all the new skills that have been mastered this year were forgotten by the end of August. So take advantage of some of these ideas to keep your child learning. All of the fifth grade teachers would like to wish you and your child a safe and happy summer.

Sincerely,

The Fifth Grade Team
