COURSE SYLLABUS – WORLD HISTORY – 6TH GRADE

DORAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The sixth grade social studies curriculum consists of the following content area strands: World History, Geography, Civics, and Economics.

The primary content for this course pertains to the world’s earliest civilizations to the ancient and classical civilizations of Africa, Asia, and

Europe. Students will be exposed to the multiple dynamics of world history including economics, geography, politics, and religion/philosophy.

Students will study methods of historical inquiry and primary and secondary historical documents.

LEARNING GOALS: By the end of this course students would have learned and mastered the following topics: (1) Origins (2) The Ancient Near East (3) Civilizations of the Americas (4) Ancient Greece (5) Ancient Rome (6) Ancient India and China (7) African and Asian Civilizations

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is very important to the educational process. Attendance will be taken on a daily basis.

TARDIES: Please attend to all of your business; this includes the bathroom, before or after school, or at lunch. Tardiness will not be tolerated!

LATE WORK: All homework is due at the beginning of class. No late work is accepted. If you are absent you have the number of days you were absent to make up any work. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU MISSED, SO ASK A RESPONSIBLE CLASS MATE!

MAKE UP EXAMS: Make-up exams will be issued only if absence is excused. You need to see me as soon as you get back to set up a time to make-up the exam.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Pop Quizzes, Tests, Class Work, Writing Assignments, Current Events, Projects, Notebook checks and Homework will be the basis of grading.

ASSIGNMENTS (HW/CW/CE/ETC.): Assignments are due at the beginning of class. Assignments must be turned in on time! Late assignments may be subject to point deductions! All assignments should be turned in on loose-leaf notebook paper, not on spiral notebook paper.

PAPERS/PROJECTS: Papers/Projects are due at the beginning of class. Papers/Projects must be turned in on time! Late Papers/Projects may be subject to point deductions! Papers/Projects should be typed, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, and printed. NO USB/FLASH DRIVES WILL BE ACCEPTED!

GRADING: In order to pass this class you must keep up with all reading, homework, and class assignments. Pop Quizzes, Tests, Class Work, Writing Assignments, Current Events, Projects, Notebook checks and Homework will be the basis of grading. At the end of each grading period, all class grades will be totaled to obtain the student's percentage. I realize that when a student is absent it is difficult to catch up and remain on top of current assignments. I am willing to work with any students who is having difficulty maintaining their pace if the student speaks with me beforehand.

CLASSROOM RULES:

1. Respect the teacher, other students and yourself in our classroom. Putdowns, hurtful comments, foul language, or other such actions will not be tolerated.

2. Excuses don’t work, you do!

3. Raise your hand to be called on.

4. Come to class on time and prepared to work! This means with your work and supplies ready.

5. No candy, gum, food or drinks (soda, etc.) are allowed in the classroom.

6. No technology or gadgets are allowed in class, if I see them I will take them away and your parents/guardians will have to come pick them up in the office.

7. Pick-up after yourself, including trash, putting desk back into their places, etc.

8. No cheating or plagiarism will be tolerated. You must do your own work.
