WORLD EVENTS

WORLD EVENTS

Mr. Adkisson – 7th Grade Block

World Event assignments are due on Tuesdays. Each written world event is worth 15 points. You will earn 2 extra points for each world event you present orally in class. One extra point will be earned if your article is about a subject matter we are currently studying in social studies.

Your Assignment:

1. Choose a topic that focuses on a current issue or event happening in the world.

Find 2 different news stories or articles about this one topic. These articles are usually found in the front section of the newspaper, in magazines or online sources. Here are some examples of good websites to find online sources:

BBC News –

NPR –

NY Times – http://

Wall Street Journal –

Remember, your articles must come from a reliable news source. Your topic must not be too violent or negative. We will discuss appropriate topics in class. World Events should be about positive or interesting topics happening in the world – not about war or crime. If you have any questions, please ask me.

2. Read the articles.

3. Using the format on the back, complete the following for both articles:

• Name and Date

• Headline of article

• Type of article

• Source (Title of website & URL)

• Date of article

• Who or what is the article about?

4. You must write 5 paragraphs about your topic, outlined as follows:

1. FIRST PARAGRAPH: Introduction to the topic. Why is this story important?

2. SECOND PARAGRAPH: Summarize the article.

3. THIRD PARAGRAPH: Continue to summarize the article. Answer the following: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

4. FOURTH PARAGRAPH: How are the two articles different? Compare and contrast them. Point out similarities and differences between the two articles. Why did you choose these two articles?

5. FIFTH PARAGRAPH: Give your personal reaction to the article. Answer these question(s) in your response: If a problem is involved, give a solution. Why is this event important? Will this event change the future of our world? How is this situation alike or different to situations in the United States or here in Portland? Is it important that people learn about this topic or event?

Attach copies of both articles. (Extra points can be given to students who use recycled paper to print out their articles).

When you receive your world event back from me, file it in your folder in the classroom file cabinet.

YOU MUST CITE QUOTES IN YOUR PAPER. DO NOT CUT AND PASTE ARTICLES AND USE THEM AS THE SUMMARY SECTION OF YOUR WORLD EVENT.
