I am excited to be starting this new academic year with renewed commitment to make the remote learning as productive as possible for everyone. Students will be provided the workbooks eventually for each module in this curriculum but for right now I will be uploading all workbook tasks and activities on canvas. With the help of the teacher, the students will be working on the tasks in each lesson to deepen their conceptual understanding of Math1 standards. The goal is to provide students with the solid foundation followed by the procedural understanding so that it is enduring. The MVP curriculum also provides students multiple opportunities to retrieve the information learnt before. Research shows that the retrieval practice really helps students build lasting knowledge of a concept studied in class.I am excited to continue the launch the MVP math1 curriculum this year. Students in this course can expect to do tasks daily, which would stretch their thinking and help them grow. Though the students will be provided scaffolding whenever needed but they will also be expected to do independent and group work in breakout rooms during remote learning as well. I want you to know that I am responsible for teaching this curriculum to your child and I am here to help your child succeed. Please do not hesitate in emailing me if you see the child is struggling in this course. I will have office 8-9am and 3-4pm in case your child needs extra help, he or she is welcome to join at that time or we can arrange some other time as the schedule permits.Finally, since this is a high school level course being offered in the middle school, the rigor is going to be there. Hence certain work ethics (such as self- discipline, perseverance and organization), on the part of the student, is important to be successful in this course. The sequence of modules in this course will be as follows:Module1: SequencesModule2: Linear and Exponential FunctionsModule3: Features of FunctionsModule4: Equations and InequalitiesModule5: Systems of equations and inequalitiesModule6: Quadratic FunctionsModule7: Structure of QuadraticsModule8: Connecting Algebra and GeometryModule9: Modeling Data Each lesson in OUR curriculum is designed to take on 2 steps. Tasks where the mathematical experience take place and where we follow Launch/Explore/Discuss. Launch is what sets students up for the lesson of the day. Explore is when students do the independent thinking first, followed by a small group discussion and work time and ending with teacher led whole group discussion. At the end of every lesson there is Ready, Set, go which will be assigned as homework as sometimes used as a warmup too depending on how much we complete in a day.I will implement this curriculum with the help of live sessions as much as possible so that students can practice the collaborative problem solving. In addition, students will be extending their understanding by doing work on Nearpod, Edpuzzle, Flipgrid, Khan academy etc. The login information will be provided for these resources as and when the work is assigned, through canvas.Expectations about the online work It is the expectation that each student will log into each class on canvas, every day in the morning, after 9:00 am and find out the work that has been assigned for that day, by navigating under the Tab for that month, and then the appropriate week, from the homepage of the course. Please read and follow all the directions given for the that day’s work. Email me if something is not clear, usually I am very prompt at replying.If the student is absent on a certain day and wants to find out what he/she missed, all you need to do is to go to the homepage of the course and navigate using the right month and week tabs. Please pay attention to the due dates and turn in the work in a timely fashion to avoid penalty. If the student is turning in the picture of the assignment on canvas, please make sure that it is clearly visible. I do give feedback on the work, so it is important that I can see the work that has been turned in. If the assignment has been turned in, but has incomplete grade for it, please go to that assignment on canvas and read the feedback. The work can be resubmitted after doing the necessary corrections to improve the grade. Late work can be accepted for a partial grade. If there is a genuine reason that the child cannot complete the work on time, please email me. I expect the students to turn in the original work. Cheating and plagiarism are not acceptable and can lead to getting a zero for the assignment.Sometimes, the work would need to be turned in on some external website e.g. Edpuzzle or Flipgrid. It will be communicated under the assignment. Anytime, there is a question, please feel free to email me. Grading Criterion: To be Announced soon by GCS. I will inform you as soon as I find out.Materials Needed: For the online learning in this class, students would need a scientific calculator Ti-83 or Ti-84 Plus, a notebook, graph paper, pencil, markers. If we do go back to the classrooms later in the year, I will inform you if we need any additional items.Parent communication:I firmly believe that communication between the home and school is extremely important in overall success of each student. It has become even more important with the online learning.We will be sending regular newsletter informing you of what is happening in each class. Please fill in the google form below to provide the contact information and more, so that if I need to contact you directly, I will have the correct information. Parents should also join the ‘Remind’ app by sending a text to 81010 and messaging @ 94fgf8?(for the Math 1 classes only) Your time and attention to the submission of this google form and joining the class through Remind are appreciated.Parent Resources: Parents please click on this link to get more information about MVP curriculum and homework help videos as well as how to create help account. Academy is an excellent tool for the students to understand a new concept or to review an old concept. I will be sending the class code via canvas in the next few days so that students can join my class. I will be assigning the work on Khan Academy on a regular basis, but student can also use it independently to clarify the doubts and for extra practice.For more information/practice on Math 1 skills and beyond, I recommend the free websites given below. These websites should be more useful during these times of online learning. to the parents: We as 7th/8th VS teachers will be talking about navigating middle school courses on canvas, during the open house. I will also post video during the week of August 17th, so that the parents and the students can get familiar with it. If your child is having problems turning in the assignments on canvas, please get in touch with me through email, or google voice number, as soon as possible so the issue can be resolved. In addition, I will be touching base with the parents if I see a problem with the submissions. Just because the student is logged into canvas, does not necessarily mean that he/she is working on the assignment. Please check under the grades on canvas to find out if your child has been turning in the assignments or not. I look forward to a great year ahead and with the partnership between teacher, students and parents we can make is as a successful year no matter virtually or in class. ................
