Organisms are capable of growing, processing nutrients, and reproducing.

Examples of Organisms: Tree, fish, bear, person, mushroom, bacteria, etc.

3 Challenges of Life ? successful organisms need to be able to: 1. Obtain energy 2. Produce offspring 3. Maintain structure and stability (homeostasis)

7 Characteristics of Life (give a short description or example for each): 1. Growth and Development: human growing taller 2. Metabolism: animal eating food, plant process of photosynthesis (provides energy) 3. Reproduction: animal producing offspring, plant producing seeds, cells dividing 4. Heredity: the passing of genetic traits from parent to offspring (DNA) 5. Cellular Organization: cells make up all living things 6. Homeostasis: maintaining structure and internal stability, shivering when cold to get warm, healing from a cut 7. Response to Environment: closing eyes for protection, running from a predator
