ASSURE Model Instructional PlanTitle: Internet SafetyName: Victoria WilsonGrade Level: 7thSubject Area: Technology Lesson Length: 2 hoursAnalyze LearnersThe learners that will partake in this lesson are in their early teen years (about the 7th grade). These students live in a large city and their socioeconomic status is at or around poverty level. The lesson will take place in the computer lab where there are about 30 computers with internet access, one teacher computer, a document camera, and a projector. These students will be sitting at their own computer station and will each have a computer in front of them. Many of these students only have access to the internet at their school. Although many of the students do not have access at home and their prior knowledge concerning technology may seem to be lacking, many still excel with the use of technology and they show many characteristics of a 21st century learner. These students are very visual as well as kinesthetic. Concepts seem to be grasped easier while a piece of technology is being used, especially by the learner. For that reason, these students are required to take a technology course each semester. These students will be expecting to learn many things through the use of the different technologies, including concepts like the one explored in this lesson, internet safety. The teacher expects the students to become more fluent and comfortable with the use of technology and the different concepts concerned with it. State ObjectivesThe 7th grade technology student participating in the internet safety lesson should ALWAYS be able to identify that there are dangers on the internet such as predators, false information, sharing too much information and cyber bullying. The 7th grade technology student participating in this internet safety lesson should be able to ALWAYS recognize that simple precautions such as not sharing personal information, identifying false information and recognizing cyber bullies can be taken to protect themselves while surfing the Internet.?The 7th grade technology student participating in this internet safety lesson should be able to ALWAYS make safe choices when using the Internet.?Select Media, Materials, and Methods The materials/media that are needed for this lesson are:30 student computers30 headphonesTeacher ComputerInternetA projector hooked to the teacher computerSpeakers for the teacher computerThe presentation website about Internet Safety for Teens (step 3): presentation guide for the presenter about Internet Safety for Teens (step 3) web quest for the students to do about internet safety (step 5): quiz website (step 6) : copies of the task sheet found at : (Step 5) the learners are mostly visual and kinesthetic, a hands-on and visual lesson plan is most appropriate. The students will be watching a presentation that contains slides and videos (auditory and visual). They will then be asked questions and a conversation will take place between the teacher, who is acting as only a facilitator, and the students (Didactic questioning and grand conversation). The students will then participate in an internet safety web quest on their own computers (Experiential Learning). Finally, the students will take an online safety quiz on their own (Independent Study). Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods The materials that need to be previewed are the three websites and the technologies that are being used. The teacher needs to be sure that the sites are functioning properly and are easily maneuverable for the learners. All of the technology such as the projector, headphones, and computers need to be functional and must be checked prior to the lesson being given. being used. The teacher needs to be sure thatthe he questiThe materials that will need to be prepared ahead of time are the task sheets. These should be printed and ready to go for the students. The video that is watched as a class should also be already pulled up on the teacher computer and projected on to the screen/whiteboard. The physical learning environment will need to be prepared. All student computers should be at least turned on and possibly logged on to the web quest page. The headphones will also already be at each computer and plugged in. While the videos are playing, the lighting will be dim. The learners will be prepared for the lesson through the grand conversation and the questioning that is done prior to and during the lesson. The learners will be given a chance to reflect on their own past experiences with the internet and scaffold from what they know before the lesson is given. The teacher will play the role of the facilitator for this lesson. They will encourage participation and keep the conversation and questioning going. The teacher will not be a lecturer. The videos and the web quest will provide the information needed. As the web quests are being done, the teacher will walk around and assess through observation and questioning of the students. Require Learner Participation The lesson will begin with a grand conversation about the internet. The instructor will ask the learners what they know about the internet and internet safety (5 minutes). The instructor will then instruct the students not to touch their computers and to pay attention to the presentation that is going to be projected on the white board (1 minute). The instructor will then begin the slide show “Internet Safety for Teens” located at . The instructor will ask questions about the different slides and get the students to share their ideas about the slides and videos. The “presentation guide” gives several great questions and conversation starters for each of the slides and videos. The instructor can use these at their discretion. The presentation guide is found here: (45 minutes). After the presentation is complete, the instructor will again proceed with a grand conversation and get the learners thoughts on what they just watched (5 minutes). The instructor will then direct the learners to the website . The students should be given the task sheets that were printed ahead of time. They will be instructed to follow the directions on the web quest and to fill out the different answers to the questions when the web quest indicates that they need to do so. The students will know the order of the tasks and videos that need to be watched because the students are guided by the web quest (45 minutes). Upon completion of the web quest, the students will finally be directed to a site where they will complete a short assessment on internet safety. This site is located at (5 minutes)The instructor will check the score of each student’s quiz and record them as well as collect the task sheet from the web quest (4 minutes). Finally, the instructor will ask the students if they have any comments, questions or concerns about what they learned. The instructor should also ask the students what they liked about the lesson and what they did not. This will help with the lesson revision process (10 minutes).Learner participation will take place during the discussions that the teacher has with the students as well as through the questions that are asked of the students. The learners will also be participating while they are doing the web quest, completing their task sheet, and taking their online quiz. Evaluate & Revise The educator will be able to evaluate learner performance many times throughout this lesson. Learners will be evaluated through questioning, grand conversations, observations, the web quest, the task sheet and the quiz as well as through this rubric. After the lesson is over, the teacher will be able to evaluate their lesson and the teaching of it though the lesson evaluation questions asked below.
