JRBA extends its Congratulations to Rev. Cadance Tyler, wife of Rev. Adam Tyler, who was ordained to the Gospel Ministry on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at Grace Hills Baptist Church. She is appreciative of the love and support of her JRBA friends.

First Baptist Dillwyn hosted an 80th Birthday Celebration for Rev. Jimmy Dunn on January 27, 2019. About 135 -140 people were in attendance. Rev. Dunn preached at the 11::00 AM service. His topic was The Church As It Ought To Be (Acts 1:8, 12-14 Acts 2:41-47). He stressed several church attributes of the first century that should still define the church of Christ today! The church should be a “witnessing” church – spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ and led by the Holy Spirit. The church should be a “praying” church – gathering to pray and praying individually. The church should be an “inviting” church – finding those who are lost and gathering them into the fold. The church should be an “attending” church – people devoted to being in church learning about God and fellowshipping with their brothers and sister in Christ. The church should be in one accord – promoting the spirit of Christ rather than individual opinions. The church should be a “giving” church -reaching out to those in need. The world still needs the church of today to display and live out those attributes! Rev. Dunn challenged FBC and all of the churches with members in attendance. But true to his style, the sermon was interlaced with wit and humor. During the service the FBC choir rendered a joyful rendition of The Old County Church in Rev. Dunn’s honor. Many of Rev. Dunn’s family was in attendance for the event. A delicious lunch was served by FBC and everyone enjoyed the fellowship around the table. Rev. Dunn had asked for donations to Rise Against Hunger and Hope Boxes rather than gifts. $749.50 was raised for Rise Against Hunger and several Boxes of Hope were donated as well. What a wonderful time of celebration for a dear man of God!

JRBA Executive Board Meeting

January 21, 2019

Rev. Michael Khol, Moderator, opened the meeting by stating that on Sunday night (the night before), while doing this prison ministry, one of the inmates had spoken at length on Matthew 11:28-30, commenting that coming to Christ is good and easy and pleasant and joyful. Rev. Khol then asked if he was right. He stated emphatically, “YES!” But then he asked if this is what we experience, pointing out that in John, Christ says that “they” will hate you because of me. He pointed out that in our cushy American life, we are not often physically persecuted, but in some parts of the world, Christians are. He looked at the phrase, “Come you who labor” and commented that the most miserable labor is that done in vain. When we toil on earth, it is for nothing, but if we work with Christ, we are built up and helped. As Paul says, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18) He stated that we need to remember that one of our favorite phrases (from Philippians 4) is “the peace that passes all understanding”. Taking up Christ’s yoke doesn’t mean we have no burden, but God is with us as we work together for God’s kingdom. Rev. Khol then led us in prayer, thanking God for the meeting and asking for His presence.

After some discussion, Rev. Roger Woody moved that we continue the meeting, even though we were one church short of a quorum due to weather conditions. Rev. Perry Clore seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.

Rev. Khol called the meeting to order. Frank Breault, Clerk, had the roll call of churches. There were 15 in attendance, representing 8 churches.

The minutes of the October 8, 2018, Executive Board Meeting were presented and approved. The minutes of the JRBA 186th Annual Fall Meeting were presented and approved. The Treasurer’s Quarterly Report was presented by Treasurer, Judy Ownby. As of December 31, 2018, the checking account balance was $30,274.63, which included the following: Additional Missions - $1,600.00, Mission Trips - $1,150.00, and Rise Against Hunger - $840.11. Total receipts for the quarter = $7,475.98 (Church donations – $5,747.30, Rise Against Hunger - $222.85, Additional Missions-Annual Fall Meeting Offering - $498.00, and Interest on checking - $7.83), Total disbursements = $6,020.13, including Mission Trips – 650.00, Disaster Relief (Annual Meeting offering) – $498.00, and $100 each to Pregnancy Support Center, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Grace Inside, The Gideons, and S. Central VA Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The Saving Account Balance was $4,239.45. The report was approved as presented. Ms. Ownby then announced that there had been at least 3 charges against the Benevolence Fund that were not generated by JRBA. Apparently someone had acquired the account information and was making charges against it. The bank recommended that we close the present account and open a new one. Rev. Perry Clore moved that we do so. The Finance Committee recommended Mrs. Betty Toney, Mr.Terry Towler, and Rev. Michael Kho be approved as check signers for the new accountl. The motion was seconded and approved.

Mrs. Betty Toney, Benevolence Chair, presented the quarterly Benevolence report. During the quarter, two families were assisted with overdue electric bills, one family was assisted with food after a fire, and one family was assisted with overdue rent. Total disbursements = $325.00. Contributions from Cedar, Sharon and Mulberry Grove = $800.00. The checking account balance - $5,241.75. Mrs. Toney noted that with the problem arising on the checking account, the committee will, in the future, mail electric bill payment directly to the company. Assistance with food will be in the form of a gift card, and if anyone needs assistance with gasoline, we have arranged with Seay Milling Company to take care of this, and we will reimburse them by check. Caution will be more thoroughly exercised in writing checks to any individuals.

Rev. Khol then gave his Moderator’s report. He stated that he was excited with how much JRBA accomplished in 2018, naming a few projects: Operation Christmas Child, Food Distribution, Hope for Appalachia, Rise Against Hunger, Backpack Ministry, Hygiene Kits for the Fluvanna Women’s Prison, Bland Mission Trip, and the Missions Blitz. He thanked the various committees that had done a wonderful job and stated that he was looking forward with excitement to see what we can accomplish in 2019.

Officers’ Reports:

Mrs. Betty Toney, JRBA WMU Director, stated that the WMU is in the process of planning its Spring Meeting and is busy helping with Hope for Appalachia boxes. Rev. Jimmy Dunn called for us to put a fresh emphasis on Sunday School, stating that it was disappointing to have church attendance so much larger than SS attendance on any given Sunday. He suggested some strategies to increase class size and commented that Rev. Tony Brooks, BGAV SS/Discipleship Specialist, had expressed a willingness to come and conduct a mini-conference on SS. Rev. Dunn asked what evenings would be most appropriate. It was suggested that Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday would work, and he stated that he would check into the matter further.

Committee Reports:

Missions: Rev. Khol stated that we had been in contact with the Rise Against Hunger organization and with Maysville Baptist Church about the Spring Meal Packing Event. The organization stated that June 2 or June 9 were preferable. Maysville preferred June 9. The projected date of June 9, 2019, was accepted. Rev. Dunnl stated that JRBA member churches need to start emphasizing collecting donations for the event, since the amount of money raised dictates how many meals we will be able to pack. He then encouraged people to come and help with the Blue Ridge Food Ministry and Rev. Khol noted that it is a good way to “brush shoulders” with the community. Rev. Woody Moore thanked everyone for their support and prayers for Hope Boxes for Appalachia, stating that the JRBA had provided over 800 boxes last year. Rev. Khol took the opportunity to ask which of our churches could have provided that many boxes on their own. He stated that this was yet another example of the JRBA working together to accomplish more than each church could do on its own. Rev. Moore noted that it would be a great help if some churches could provide a meal for the team. The spring distribution trip is scheduled for April 15 – 20 and there would be about 50 people to feed for the meal. He asked for anyone interested in helping to contact him. Rev. Dunn pointed out that several of our churches reached out to shut-ins and other people in need during the Christmas season, and encouraged us to continue to do so during the dark, rough months of January and February.

There was no Old Business.

New Business: Rev. Khol presented the list of Standing and Ad Hoc Committees for 2019. It was approved as presented. (See page 8.)

During the time of announcements, Rev. Roger Woody invited anyone interested to Chestnut Grove’s 2nd Annual Wild Game night on January 26. Rev. John Moxley invited everyone to First Baptist on Sunday, January 27, in observance of Rev. Dunn’s 80th birthday. He also announced that we had received an open invitation from the NAACP to attend a breakfast at the Crystal Cathedral on February 16, at 9:30 AM. Rev. Roger Woody announced that he and Rev. John Moxley would be hosting a program, “Pastor’s Perspective” on Facebook on February 4, in which they would answer questions about Christ and being a Christian.

There being no other business, Rev. Jimmy Dunn made a motion to adjourn. It was seconded and approved. He then closed the meeting with prayer.

The Baptist General Association of Virginia held a Retirement Celebration for Dr. Jeff Cranford on Monday, January 21, 2019, at Burton’s Grill in Charlottesville. Nine leaders from JRBA were in attendance and enjoyed the fellowship with other leaders from across the state as well as Jeff’s family and close ministerial friends. Comments were shared by Dr. John Upton, Rev. Eddie Heath, and numerous others during the event, sharing what a caring person Jeff is and how much he has meant to the associations of the Central Region.

Jeff also shared a slide show of photos down through his years as a minister, with his family, and in his various positions with Virginia Baptists. Jeff will be retiring from his position of Field Strategist for the Central Region as of March 1, 2019, but will be continuing in his role as Financial Advisor with GuideStone. He is looking forward to more free time to spend with his family, especially his grandchildren. JRBA will miss Jeff and wish him well in this new chapter of his life.

Skip Wallace will be the new Field Strategist for the Central Region, which includes JRBA. We look forward to working with him.
