Description: 8th grade students will continue studying American History, picking up where they left off last year with the development and implementation of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.  The rest of this semester will be spent looking at Westward Expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Immigration and the Industrial Revolution.  After winter break, we will continue to explore the 20th century, examining the Progressive Era, the World Wars, the Great Depression and beyond.  

Materials: Students are expected to come to class each day prepared to work. Necessary materials include a 3-4” three ring binder (to be shared with science, mathematics, and music), a folder, and loose leaf paper (for the binder). Students are also expected to have a working pencil or pen.

Grading Policy: Students will receive a grade on all projects, writing assignments, quizzes and exams.  Additionally, at least one homework a week will be graded.  Grades on individual assignments will be reported as: Not Yet Proficient (NYP), Almost Proficient (AP), Proficient (P), and Highly Proficient (HP).  The breakdown of grades and their equivalent percentages are listed below.

PRIDE Grade: In addition to their letter grade, students will receive points for PRIDE value performance. This includes class participation, preparedness, attitude etc. Students must receive a 3 or 4 PRIDE Grade in order to qualify for honor roll.

*Redoing Assignments: Students who receive an AP or NYP on an assignment will be given the opportunity to redo the assignment for a higher grade.  The higher score will be averaged.

Absence Policy: Absent students are responsible for finding out what they missed in class and for homework. Students and parents may check the class website, speak with Mr. Quaintance directly or check with a fellow student. *Absent students who do not attempt to complete missed assignments will receive a zero.

Website: 8th Grade Social Studies information will be available on the class website. This is located at quaintance.. This site will be updated as frequently as possible and can be checked by parents to stay informed.

Extra Credit: Students will have opportunities for extra credit throughout the year. All extra credit assignments will relate to the current curriculum. Examples include museum visits, artistic projects, outside reading and oral reports.

|AP |2 |Almost Proficient applies to work which is nearing proficiency.  Understandings are incomplete and/or there are a few mistakes |

| | |present. *Students demonstrating AP performance may be expected to redo the assignment. |

|NYP |1 |Not Yet Proficient applies to work which needs drastic improvement.  *Students demonstrating NYP performance will be expected to redo |
