Course Syllabus

1. Reading: Students will use active reading skills to aid comprehension in

fiction and non-fiction texts. Additionally, students will be required to make written reflections in preparation for the PSSA test in the area of English and Language Arts.

2. Accelerated Reading: All students will be required to read a minimum of two books per

quarter and complete tests on each. All students are encouraged to work toward the PA state requirement of reading 25 books by the end of the school year.

3. Literature: The class will read various stories and novels from the literature

textbook and classroom library. Students will also be exposed to the form and elements of literature.

4. Writing: Students will write in a variety of styles. Forms will include

informal responses and formal 5-paragraph essays throughout the year. Formal writing assignments are graded using the Pennsylvania domain assessment which focuses on the six characteristics of effective writing: focus, content, organization, style, and conventions. Additionally, each writing assignment is graded on format and process. All assignments are directed toward meeting the writing standards for the PSSA ELA test.

5. Research: Students will assess valid sources and apply proper research

techniques. MLA format will be used for bibliographic citations.

6. Grammar: Instruction will cover the basic areas of grammar (parts of speech,

phrases, clauses, sentence structure, etc.). Daily Grammar Practice

(DGP) will be incorporated into the grammar study.

7. Dictionary: Students will be instructed in the effective use of this important

research tool.

8. Vocabulary/Spelling: Instruction will be addressed throughout novel and textbook

reading. Students will be responsible for word spelling, meaning, usage, and part of speech.

9. Speaking: Students will complete oral presentations and develop listening

skills.

10. Notebook Tests: Each quarter students will have a notebook test. Only papers that

are attached to the rings of the language arts notebook will be permitted for use on the test. Any papers not attached will be removed from the notebook prior to the start of the test; use of any unattached papers during the test will be considered cheating.
