Spelling Bee Rules and Procedures

1. The contest will be conducted orally.

2. Each speller has 1‵敳潣摮⁳潴瀠潲潮湵散攠捡⁨潷摲挠敬牡祬‮瑓灯慷捴敨⁳楷汬戠⁥獵摥琠敭獡牵⁥桴⁥楴敭മ⸳䔉捡⁨潷摲洠祡戠⁥牰湯畯据摥漠汮⁹睴捩⹥㐍म潗摲5 seconds to pronounce each word clearly. Stopwatches will be used to measure the time.

3. Each word may be pronounced only twice.

4. Words should be pronounced according to the diacritical markings at merriam-

5. After the pronouncer gives the speller a word the speller will be encouraged (but not required) to pronounce the word before spelling it and after spelling it.

6. Before starting to spell a word, the speller may ask the pronouncer to pronounce the word again, and/or define it.

7. Having started to spell a word, the speller may stop and start over, retracting the spelling from the beginning.

In retracting, however, there can be no change of letters, or their sequence from those first pronounced.

If letters or their sequence is changed in the respelling, the speller will be eliminated.

8. An obsolete or archaic spelling shall be regarded as an error.

9. The contest will be conducted in rounds. Each speller remaining in the spelling bee at the start of a round shall spell one word in a round (except as provided in rule 10 below)

10. Upon missing the spelling of the word, the speller is immediately eliminated from the contest, and the next word on

the pronouncer’s list is given to the next speller.

11. When the number of spellers is reduced to two, the elimination procedure changes. At that point, when one speller

misspells a word, the other speller shall be given an opportunity to spell that same word. If the second speller spells

that word correctly, plus the next word on the pronouncer’s list, then the second speller shall be declared the

champion. If one of the last two spellers misses and the other after correcting the error, misspells the new word

submitted to him or her, then the misspelled new word shall be given to the first speller. If the first speller then

succeeds in correcting the error and correctly spells the next word on the pronouncer’s list, then he or she shall be

declared the champion. If both spellers misspell the same word, both shall continue in the contest.

12. Any question relating to the spelling of a word should be referred to the pronouncer and judges immediately.

The judges are in complete control of the competition, and their decision shall be final in all questions.
