A Word from Mr. M
The last two weeks were interesting in Maverickland. We had a Visiting Author who was definitely one of the coolest people I have ever met! Ms. Heather L. Montgomery is a biologist by vocation and children’s author by avocation and has written quite a few intriguing books. I also attended the Cobb County Spelling Bee with Z., Ms. Appleyard and Z’s Dad. Much, more about that is below!
Z. H. Rocks the Cobb Spelling Bee!
I had forgotten how tense and nerve racking a five hour County Spelling Bee can be, but our own Z. kept his head and exhibited his usual cool all the way into Round 5 before being tripped up by the word Caribbean. But there is much, much more to this story. Last Saturday morning at Kennesaw Mountain High School there were 72 competitors from all over the county and ranging from 4th grade to 8th grade and this was what Z. was up against! The first Round was brutal and cut the field in half! Some of the words that took competitors out were: prosthetic, derelict, pearlescent, charismatic, enumerated, prodigious, hypotenuse, exquisite, holocaust, inadvertent, nuisance, remonstrate, Huguenot, apparition, siphon, ascetic, circumvent, and Tetanus. Z. held strong with his word, aperture. Round 2 was a little less intense, but the field was again thinned almost in half with words like nostril, mammoth, furlong, newton, and hassock. Again, our Maverick Z. held strong with llama. The next two Rounds got more intense as we got into hours 3 and 4 of the competition. The competitors who were weak spellers were gone, and only the hard core brilliant students like Z. remained. But still the field was winnowed with words like libretto, boudoir, geisha, matriarch, chalupa, tortoni, alleviate, tantalize, sauerbraten, hemerocallis, sassafras and syntax and still, at the end of those rounds, Z. stood strong with the final 15 by correctly spelling the words adamant and epileptic. Then time and energy started to take a toll on each child. Dorsal, Adirondack, aquarelle, gauche, Scandinavia, quasi and then our champion faltered with his word and the punishment was over. Z. had stood for over five hours against over 70 of the best Cobb County could muster before falling. Z., you will forever be a champion to all Mavericks and live forever in our hearts and legends. Good Work Old Man! (Zhikai is pictured above on the left with the final 20 competitors)

Maverick Moment
Every year I share the Eleven Rules for Being Human. When the eleventh rule is shared, the class will be on the threshold of going off to middle school. This is another great rule!
Rule Number 4: “A lesson is repeated until learned.
A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it.
When you have learned that lesson, you can then go on to the next lesson.”
