Our high school program is competitive and comparative. Tryouts are about finding the best

10-12 players to fill varsity (1st), regardless of grade, then Jr. Varsity (typically juniors/maybe a couple sophomores), B-Squad/sophomore team (typically sophomores) and 9th grade (A/B) teams (9th graders). It is about physical condition and volleyball skill displayed-first during tryouts, then throughout the season.

We typically have 9-10 play on the floor each game and match. These spots are earned through tryouts and practices every day of the season. It is not about even playing time. It is about putting the best team on the floor. Other team members are working hard to do their best – they are hoping to beat out a “starter”, and whether they do or not they are really helping the team get better! This is healthy competition! The optimum number of people on a team is 10-12; we may keep up to 15, as per MSHSL rules, but many will not see any court time.

If you make a team, be proud that you are involved in our program, wherever you are at. Work hard, challenge yourself and set realistic goals. We expect at least 80 kids to come out this season. Wow!! This is awesome, but difficult because we can not keep all players.

Our tryout evaluation team is run by me, but I do not assess any of the drills. Our assessments are completed by the coaching staff and two or three knowledgeable outside people. At the end of each day scores are totaled, then added to the next day’s total.

Wednesday we will be looking extra hard at positions and making sure each team has athletes capable of playing the roles necessary for the team. Kids will be communicated with at tryouts and will receive a letter on Wednesday letting them know where their scores they earned placed them. Those not making a team may be talented, but this is comparative and we only need so many in each position- just the nature of the game.

Parents, please talk to your daughter and prepare for that possibility of not making a team/being “cut” – this is hard! Also remember that other VB options may still work out – whether it is playing traveling or coaching with Community Education, or serving as a manager. We may also still need Junior Ranger coaches for our afterschool 7th and 8th grade program. This is a paid position and you must be at least 16. If interested, ask about these opportunities.

Volleyball is a great game and tryouts are extremely hard on everyone! Understand we have a job to do. It is not about anything other than honestly assessing what we see at tryouts and moving forward from that.

I hope each of you brings your best with you into the gym this week so you can feel good that you came prepared and gave your best effort. Best of luck!!
