Teacher Usage for 9th Grade Algebra I

Instructions: Please describe how you used the LSU College Readiness Program resources and in particular how you used the MyMathLab system and content. Include the number of homework assignments, the number of quizzes, and the number of tests that your students were required to do, and also include the percent of the final grade that each represented.

Ruby Hull – Northeast High School

I used the MyMathLab system for one Algebra I class to help improve my students math skills and to practice solving problems on the computer. We went to the lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. I assigned four homework assignments for each unit. Each assignment was worth 10% of the grade for that unit.

Michelle Johnson – Broadmoor High School

I used MyMathLab twice a week during the first semester. During the second semester, I was able to use the mobile lab so I was able to use MyMathLab a little bit more. I have assigned a total of 64 homework assignments and a total of 15 test/quizzes. In the first semester, MyMathLab work represented only 20% of the student’s grade. In the second semester, MyMathLab work represented 45% of their final grade. For the measurement unit, I created one assignment on significant digits and was able to import an assignment from the geometry class on conversion of units. Though I did not use MyMathLab much during this unit, I assigned homework for practice and review from units such as percents and problem solving skills.

Lisa Hoppenstedt – Tara High School

Because we received our MyMathLab student access codes several weeks after school had started in the fall, I did not assign some of the initial homework assignments available. I did use fifty-two of the homework assignments and created seven additional end-of-course chapter review assignments. My students were only allowed to go to the computer lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week so I chose to give paper tests instead of computer generated tests in MyMathLab. I wanted to utilize my lab time with the homework assignments because many of my students did not have internet access at home. I feel that using MyMathLab definitely increased the EOC test scores for the students who worked diligently this school year. Unfortunately, many of my students do not display the initiative to perform well and do not consider education important in their future.

Stephanie Fike – Woodlawn High School

I used the LSU College Readiness Program resources in much the same ways that were discussed last summer in the workshop. I followed the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum (LCC) for the content and calendar. Unit 1 was primarily on paper because of the delay in getting MyMathLab student access codes. Units 2 – 6 were primarily completed using MyMathLab. I chose homework assignments from MyMathLab that corresponded with the LCC for these units. I used the Mini Lessons Resources to introduce new material and as warm-ups to begin each class. These were collected and graded for completion every week. Students were responsible for completing all of the problems discussed as a class in Whole Class discussions. Then, the students worked the corresponding homework assignments in MyMathLab. Each successful homework problem was worth one point toward the student’s grade. Each correct quiz or test problem was worth two points toward the grade.
