2020-2021 Course Syllabus

Instructor: Mrs. Suarez Room Number: Building 2, Room 210 Email: ssuarez@ Office Hours: By appointment only

Course Description:

Pre-AP English 1 students will learn, grow, and succeed through focused content, horizontally and vertically aligned instruction, and targeted assessments for learning. This course will allow students to slow down and focus on the most essential and relevant concepts and skills. Students have frequent opportunities to engage deeply with texts, sources, and data as well as compelling higher-order questions and problems. Students experience shared instructional practices and routines that help them develop and strengthen the important critical thinking skills they will need to employ in high school, college, and life.

Texts take center stage in the Pre-AP English 1 classroom, where students engage in close, critical reading of a wide range of materials. The course trains the reader to observe the small details within a text to arrive at a deeper understanding of the whole. It also trains the writer to focus on crafting complex sentences as the foundation for writing to facilitate complex thinking and communicate ideas clearly.

For the 2020-2021 academic school year, students will be using an innovative program created by the College Board, called SpringBoard. This program follows the Florida State Standards and assists students in developing the knowledge and skills necessary for Advanced Placement courses as well as success in college and beyond. SpringBoard is designed to help students make meaning of complex texts and prepare them for the rigorous textual analysis expected of them in Advanced Placement (AP) English and college courses. SpringBoard helps students build content knowledge primarily through engagement with a wide range of high-quality literary and informational texts. Extending this core reading program with a rich independent reading program ensures that SpringBoard students are reading widely and becoming broadly literate.
