"No matter how good teaching may be, each student must take the responsibility for his own education."

- John Carolus S. J.

English is a subject that requires a lot of participation and doing things a little differently than in other classes. Sometimes you will learn things that don’t seem to be related to English at all – they are only the topics chosen to practice the real content: the language. To truly learn a new language, you must be willing to make mistakes and learn from them. You must be willing to try to fix your mistakes several times, and you must be patient with yourself. Improvements are slow sometimes, which is why you need to be constant and responsible.

❖ Evaluating Our Learning: Throughout the year we will be using tests, projects, quizzes and creative assignments to evaluate our progress towards our learning goals in the following three areas:

✓ Written Expression (Writing & Grammar)

✓ Reading Comprehension (Reading & Vocabulary)

✓ Oral Skills (Listening & Speaking)

❖ Speaking English: Improving your English skills requires active participation 100% of the time. Therefore, you will be required to speak in English at all times during class. You must also speak English when you address any English teacher outside the classroom.

Participation Grade: At the end of each semester, you will be evaluated for your participation and the correct use of English in class according to the participation/speaking rubric. See final page.

❖ Materials: In order for school materials (such as books and binders) to effectively support our learning, we need to have them in class. Not bringing your materials is unfair not only to your learning, but also to the other students with whom you share. In this instance a disciplinary slip will be issued.

❖ Assignments: The English department expects students to complete all assigned work to the best of their ability and bring it to class on the day it is due. If a student doesn’t do her assignment or part of it, or doesn’t respect the due date, a disciplinary slip will be issued.

❖ Evaluations: Language is learned as a whole, even though evaluations are divided into separate skills. Points will be taken off for spelling, vocabulary, and grammar mistakes in any evaluation. Remember to always proofread your work.

Every test has to be answered in blue/black pen. If the student answers the test with a pencil, she will not be able to complain about correction.

❖ Evaluation dates: The evaluation dates will not be changed unless there is a change in the school calendar or department plan.

❖ Absent to an evaluation: If the student doesn’t show up to an evaluation, she will have to present a medical certificate or a parent’s note explaining the reason for her absence to her English teacher. This has to be done the first English class the student attends after her abscess. It is her responsibility to do it.

The student will have to take the test the following date for late tests. These dates will be posted on the school web page and /or on the second floor bulletin board next to the English department. It will be the student’s responsibility to check the date and classroom for English Late tests. If the student doesn’t show up for her test she will receive a 2.0.

❖ Copying or plagiarism: As stated in the school’s rules, if a student hands in any copied or plagiarized work, this work will be evaluated with a 2.0 and a detention slip will be issued.

Late Assignments: late assignments will be marked down as follows:

• Projects and final papers will have a point less (1.0) from your final grade for each day it is late, even if you do not have English class that day.

• Pre – writing or rough draft: half a point (0.5) for each late day

Late assignments and projects must be turned in directly to Academic Coordination (Miss Loreto Vergara’s office).

❖ Independent Reading Plan: There is a book in the library for each student. It is the student’s responsibility to borrow any books needed and return them in perfect conditions. It is also up to each student to meet the library`s requirements for borrowing books..
