P.S.A.T. – Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test

Registration Information

The P.S.A.T. test will be given during the regular school day at CSAS on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 for 9th, 10th, and 11th* grade students. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a co-sponsored program by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corp. The test measures the critical reading, math problem solving, and writing skills that students have been developing throughout school. It does not measure areas such as creativity and motivation, and it doesn’t recognize those special talents that may be important to colleges. All students may take the PSAT test, but students enrolled in Algebra I this year will be better prepared to take PSAT next year.

By taking the PSAT/NMSQT students can….

Compare themselves with other college-bound students around the country.

Find out what the SAT is like. (The PSAT/NMSQT includes actual SAT questions.)

Assess a student’s verbal, math, and writing skills.

Forecast a student’s SAT scores.

Participate in the Student Search Service to get mail from colleges.

For juniors only: Enter the National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions.

Obtain scores necessary to apply for programs such as The State of Tennessee Governor’s School and other summer programs.

Practice questions for the PSAT/NMSQT test are available on the CollegeBoard website and in materials available in local bookstores. TEL (Tennessee Electronic Library) is a free and valuable website to prepare for the PSAT, ACT and SAT tests. To get online: Go to the website. Click on Test Prep. Click on LearningExpress Library. If you are a new user, register. If you are a return user, enter your user name and password. Using the menu on the left side of the screen, click on the Learning Center of your choice.
