Lesson Title: Textiles Across Time

Type of Activity:

Instructional Goal: Students will use several pieces of evidence to compare/contrast the developments in production from the 1st industrial revolution to the 2nd industrial revolution.

Alignment to the NCSCS:

Competency Goal 7: Technology and Changing Global Connections - The learner will consider the short- and long-term consequences of the development of new technology.

7.01 Assess the degree to which discoveries, innovations, and technologies have accelerated change.

7.03 Examine the causes and effects of industrialization and cite its major costs and benefits.

7.04 Describe significant characteristics of global connections created by technological change, and assess the degree to which cultures participate in that change.

Materials/Resources Needed:

A method for students to view internet material – this lesson may be done with an LCD projector or in a computer lab.















Optional (suggested) “Mill Times” PBS video by David Macaulay – images, re-enactment, and animation of the first textile mills in New England.

Guided T-Chart (included)

Activity steps and timeline:

Describe the purpose of the lesson – To learn how textile production changed during the 100 years from the 1st Industrial Revolution to the 2nd Industrial Revolution. (2 mins.)

Hand out the Guided T-Chart that will be used to collect information from the sources (3 mins.)

(options available here) Pairs to read from the appropriate portion of the class textbook about textile production in the late 1700s early 1800s and enter the important information on the left portion of the T-Chart (15 mins.)

Or

View and and click on Mill Village Pictures and enter important information on the left side of the T-Chart (15 mins.)

Or

View the PBS video “Mill Times” by David Macaulay and enter the important information on the left side of the T-Chart (40 mins. – choosing this activity makes this a two day lesson plan).

-Discussion regarding the T-Chart entries – (5 mins.)

-Project Digital Forsyth photos for the class to view and enter information on the right side of the T-Chart. (10 mins.)

-Discussion of the entries on the right side of the T-Chart

Develop a reflection/closure: Draw a horizontal line across the chalk/dry-erase board in the front of the room. Have students write/list similarities between the two eras above the line and differences below the line. Discuss the two lists. (5 mins.)

Develop an assessment: [methods for assessment should match selected standards from NCSCS and how well instructional goals were achieved]

-In a 5 paragraph format students should write an essay that compares/contrasts textile production over the approximately 100 year period from the 1st Industrial Revolution to the 2nd Industrial Revolution.
