Part 1: News in Television

Directions: Watch at least 1 hour of a television news broadcast on a MAJOR news network (do not watch your local news). Answer the questions below related to the stories being discussed – remember to take notes while you are watching!

What news station did you watch?

What stories did the news broadcast discuss (there should be more than one explained here)?

Choose the TOP news story the broadcast discussed (this is usually the one they spend the most time on or is deemed BREAKING NEWS). WHAT was it about? (Provide at least a paragraph description including details).

Part 2: News in Print

Directions: Use either your local newspaper or internet newspaper sources to find news articles related to the TOP news story you watch and commented on in Part 1 of this worksheet. You may have to complete this part of the worksheet the day AFTER you watch the news broadcast. Breaking news often will not make print sources until the day after the event.

HOW is this story important? What is going to be the effect of this information? Can you detect any Bias in the article? What is the Point of View of the writer of the article? Is the information and analysis credible? How do you know?

PREDICT what you think might happen as this story continues to develop?

ASK - Write a well-developed and thoughtful question that the class can answer from the news article. It should not be a YES or NO question.

ANSWER – Write, in complete sentences, a thoughtful response to your own question.
