Short Paper/Presentation #1: Current Event Assignment (10% of final grade)

Objective: To be informed and inform others in the class about various current political issues.

Paper Due Date and Presentation: The paper is due on the day you are scheduled to present. The presentation should be about 10 minutes long. The presentation schedule is below.

Description: This assignment is a summary of a newspaper article about a current event in the news and a description of how the news story relates to the course. The story should focus on the US midterm elections and/or the general topic of politics in the US. The paper should be approximately 2 pages, typed and double-spaced. The following is a guideline for organization:

• Summary of news story content

• Relation of news item to the course

• Conclusion: A thoughtful opinion about the importance of the topic

Students are to select an article from the assigned source (please see the schedule on the next page). The paper is due on the day you are scheduled to present.

Grading Criteria:

• Article current, relevant to the course, and in-depth

• Connection made between the course and the article

• Clearly written with very few errors

• Presented on time in a clear manner*

• Article attached to paper and submitted on time

• Thoughtful opinion (conclusion)

A range – All of the above criteria are clearly met

B range – 1 criteria weak/missing

C range – 2 criteria weak/missing

D range – 3 criteria weak/missing

No credit – 4+ criteria weak/missing

*IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT GRADING:

• Failure to present to the class will result in a 50-point deduction from the assignment grade.

• Unexcused (meaning undocumented) absences when others present will result in 15 points per absence being deducted from this assignment grade.
