Perspectives on Abortion: Pro-Choice, Pro-Life, and What Lies in BetweenAuthor Raquel LopezAnalysis PaperRosa DelgadoWebb- English 106September 19, 2012Analysis of “Perspectives on: Pro-Choice, Pro-Life, and What Lies in Between” was written by Raquel Lopez and published in the European Journal of Social Science, 2012. The article highlights different areas between the pro-life; moral and religious perspectives versus pro-choice and ethical, moral and philosophical perspectives. The author obtains records of information through ancient, medieval and present time of abortion and historical origin (Macfarlane, Meir 2001), and gathers data from the United States Abortion Surveillance 2001, a governmentally sponsored agency of the demographics of women seeking abortion. The statistics showed women with the highest abortion rate between the ages of twenty and twenty- four years (33.6 %), 54.1% of the abortions were white women, 35.7% were African American. The most significant piece of information regarding the reasons why these women would have an abortion were the women stated the baby would conflict with their lifestyle, issue of affordability and no support from partner. In her paper “Perspectives on Pro-Choice, Pro-Life, and What Lies in between” Lopez highlights how women’s health issue can be dictated by men as such in the case of Roe vs. Wade were Jane Doe affirmed to have been raped by a gang and became pregnant. According to Beckwith (2007) not only did Roe win lawsuit but changed the current law of the United States. Lopez writes a good paper showing examples of both sides of pro-choice, pro-life debates, history and present legal abortion rulings. The article was well written but I feel author could have expanded more on reasons women gave for getting abortions, author briefly shows that ( 33.6%) of females who have abortions are between twenty and twenty- four years of age but did not mention statistics of abortions on teenagers or single mothers.Author does a good job of identifying the three philosophical questions utilized for both pro-choice and pro-life debates giving person questions to explore. Do embryos have a moral value? If they do what is it? Are they entitled to human rights? What makes abortion equally permissible? How should a society organize itself towards limiting, facilitating, or banning abortion? I agreed with Lopez when she writes, people have different views on pro-life, pro-choice, some have moderate opinions of issue, others are two faced such as politicians and people pertaining to groups such as the church that partake in abortion themselves. Lopez makes a good point by explaining how once a person there is conscience, and conscience could bring good and evil feelings. Overall the perspectives shown in this article was able to show how many women are faced with different reason when considering to have abortion and men who dictate women’s health issues in politics need to do extensive research and let women in politics have more of a voice to meeting women’s needs. Lopez was very effective, sympathetic and showed her perspective and support to women in this debate. Reference: Lopez, R. (2001).
