This test measures a student’s English skill level in grammar, writing, and reading comprehension. The ESL Accuplacer is an untimed, multiple choice, essay prompt, and computer-based test. It usually takes students about 3 hours to complete the full test. The test includes 2 parts: Part 1: Language Usage and the ESL WritePlacer & Part 2: Reading Comprehension Practice Tips for at Home Study Read and Write: Try reading different texts and looking up words you don’t know. Note the grammar and structure of the sentences as you read. Practice writing 300-600 word essays, and familiarize yourself with essay structure. Complete Practice Tests/Attend Workshops: Visit accuplacer. to complete practice tests and learn more about the test. You can also attend one of the Accuplacer workshops that the Academic Learning Center provides. Sentence Skills and Writing Worksheets: Use the sentence skills and writing worksheets that the Academic Learning Center provides to study grammar rules and essay structure. These sheets are online and inside the Academic Learning Centers. Take your time reading the questions and answers on the test, and re-read if you need to. Read All of the Answer Options: Some of the answers may be very similar to the correct answer. By reading all of the options, you may note the slight difference between the correct and incorrect answer. WritePlacer TipsMake an Outline: Before you begin writing your WritePlacer essay, write down ideas you have and form an outline. For your outline, you can write your thesis (the main point you will make in the essay) and write out what the focus of each paragraph will be. Revise and Edit: After you have written your essay, check for misspelled words, check for common grammar mistakes, and check that your essay includes the following: an introduction that gives background information and states the main idea (thesis); body paragraphs that give details and examples to further explain your main idea; a conclusion that re-states the main idea of the paper and gives final thoughts on the topic. Each body paragraph should have a single focus – this focus should be stated in the first sentence of each paragraph. We call this sentence the topic sentence. Part 2: Reading Comprehension The Reading Comprehension portion is 20 multiple choice questions Test Taking Strategies Take Your Time: There is no time limit on the ACCUPLACER. Be sure to read slowly and reread passages if you need to.Read the Question/Options First: By reading the question and answer options first, you will know what to look for when you read the passage. Use Context to Define Unknown Words: Note where a word is placed in a sentence, and define the words you do know. By doing this, you may be able to guess what the definition of an unknown word is and in turn, better grasp the text’s meaning.Look for Telling Phrases: Phrases such as: as a result of, the cause of, or because of will help you locate the cause and effect in the passage. You could also look for phrases such as: I would argue or most importantly to locate the main idea of the passage. You can pay this fee in cash or with a credit or debit card. No food or drink is allowed in the testing center. Personal belongings will be placed in a locker while you take the text. Scratch paper and pencils are provided. Retaking the Test: You must wait 3 days to retake the test. It is recommended that you wait 2 weeks before retaking the test.
