About MDTP Tests

MDTP began in 1977 as a joint project of the University of California and the California State University. The tests are developed by a workgroup including mathematics faculty from UC and CSU systems, community colleges, and high schools. In an agreement with the University of California Regents, CAPP developed computer versions of the MDTP tests and is the sole distributor for the tests.

English Tests

CTEP: College Tests of English Placement consists of three tests:

Test 1 Reading Comprehension: This test assesses academic reading abilities including literal, inferential and critical comprehension, main idea, and vocabulary in context.

Test 2 Sentence Structure and Grammar: The skills assessed in this test include sentence structure, verb usage, parallel structure, modifiers and wordiness.

Test 3 Sentence and Syntax Skills This test is used to assess both reading and writing skills including comprehension, syntax, use of context, and vocabulary.

The CTEP was developed by community college faculty to meet the special needs of the diverse community college student population. The CTEP has been extensively researched for validity, reliability, and freedom from bias and has received full approval status by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.

A college may give one, two or three of these tests.
