8th Grade Language ArtsMs. Stahnkebstahnke@Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide 8th grade students efficient grade level language arts skills in reading, writing, speaking, vocabulary, listening, and language for college/career preparation and readiness.Grading Scale:Class Work35%Tests25%Achieve 3000/TeenBiz15%Quizzes15%Home Work10%Achieve 3000 Grading Plan: Throughout the week, you will use Achieve 3000/TeenBiz to complete Reading Lessons. Every student gets the same basic lesson, but the content is customized to match each student’s own reading level (Lexile). As your reading level improves, Achieve 3000 will increase the level of difficulty (Lexile) so you remain challenged and interested. Doing your best on the activities will ensure the greatest match between your ability and the content delivered. It is also important that your answers to the questions reflect work completed independently and without extra assistance.*Language Arts students will be completing 1 Achieve3000 per week, due on Tuesday evenings. I input grades Wednesday morning. All Achieves must be done under this teacher’s name to receive credit.Needed Supplies:Journal1-1.5 inch Binder5 DividersWide-ruled loose leafBlue or black pens (NO PENCILS)Red pens for self-corrections Highlighters Index cards on a spiralDictionary/Thesaurus (at home)**Any student desiring extra credit for later on may bring some added supplies: computer paper, tissues, paper towels, wipes, and hanging folders are all needed. Gift cards for classroom supply places such as Office Depot, Target, etc. are also VERY appreciated. Thank you!Home Learning Policy: Home learning is assigned on a regular basis. It is the student’s responsibility to copy the home learning assignment each class period from the board into their planner. The teacher will also post the home learning assignment on the school website. It is due at the beginning of the class period. Excused absences will follow school policy. Late work will only be accepted at teacher’s discretion. Cheating/Plagiarism: Plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances.?Plagiarism is using another’s work and claiming it as your own. Plagiarism can include copying another student’s work or giving your work to another student to copy.? If a student is caught plagiarizing, they will receive an F for that assignment and a 1 in conduct for the 9 weeks.? They will receive written notice and parent contact will be made immediately.? The conduct grade cannot be improved upon for that 9 week grading period. ?A referral by the teacher can be submitted to administration?depending?on the severity and/or frequency of the offense,?whereas?administration will determine if any further punishment is deemed necessary. ?Cheating is also an unacceptable offense and not tolerated under any circumstances. Cheating ?includes, but is not limited to, copying off another student’s work, allowing another student to copy your work, using any unapproved aides such as cell phones or other electronic devices, written materials, "cheat sheets", and anything that may unfairly provide a student with an answer other than their own brain. ?If a student is caught cheating, they will receive an F for that assignment and a 1 in conduct for the 9 weeks.?They will receive written notice and parent contact will be made immediately after the infraction.? This procedure is to ensure that all students are actively participating in the learning environment. Please note that if you do not have a cell phone now, but obtain one during the school year you must notify the teacher. Cell phones are not to be seen at all in class.Consequences for Unauthorized Cell Phone Usage: Consequences if you are caught using your phone during class time (checking the time, texting, checking a message, taking a picture, looking at yourself on the screen etc.):Phone confiscated and returned at the end of the dayPhone confiscated and parent must pick up in the front officePhone confiscated, parent must pick up in the front office, after school detention issued.Phone confiscated, parent must pick up in the front office, referral issued to administration.Incentives: Based on model student behavior and academics rewards will be spontaneous and at the teacher’s discretion.Absences: When a student is absent, he/she should notify the teacher upon return. The teacher will help the student gather the missing work and schedule any make up tests/quizzes that might have been missed. (If the student knows in advance of an absence, the student should notify the teacher, although this does not guarantee the student will receive the work prior to the absence.) If the absence is excused, students are allowed 2 days for every day missed to turn in work. It will not be counted late. If the absence is unexcused, students will still be allowed 2 days for every missed day to make up the work, however, it may be marked late.Home Communication: As necessary, I will communicate with parents/guardians to update them on your grades, behavior, or other necessary information. I encourage your parents/guardians to communicate with me as the situation warrants. Student/Teacher Communication: I urge you to communicate with me about any special requests you have (including late assignments, absences, seating needs, etc.) so that I can accommodate you. I want this to be a very successful year for you.
