Deerfield Beach High School9th and 10th Grade Intensive Classes Reading Plan2017-2018CurriculumComprehension InstructionStudents enrolled in Intensive Reading will use the Edge A, B, or C curriculum. FSA, FAIR, Edge Placement Text and Lexile scores will be used to determine class and book placement.Achieve 3000 will be utilized 2 days per week in all reading classes. Teachers will assign the Instructional Focus article (Target Article) and activity per week.Teachers will assign at least one bonus article and activity per week. Students are required to complete an additional article and activity at home per week.Teachers will adhere to the Literacy Instructional Focus Calendar to introduce, assess, and review Language Arts Florida standards. Business classes will utilize Achieve 3000 and Newsela to reinforce literacy skills.Novel study will be incorporated into all reading curricula each semester. Vocabulary InstructionVocabulary Through Morphemes curriculum will be used as a supplemental resource. Interactive Word Walls are a requirement in all classes. All students in reading courses will be required to maintain a vocabulary notebook that will be graded at least once per quarter. Fluency and Range of ReadingBuilding reading stamina will be done by gradually increasing the length and difficulty of reading passages throughout the school year through the Edge and Achieve 3000 curriculum. Written ExpressionStudents will write and/or revise their writing in response to literary analysis questions 2 to 3 days per week that align to the Edge and the Achieve 3000 curriculum. Writing rubrics from ELA Florida standards will be used to assist the students with their writing on a weekly basis. Reading teachers will evaluate student writing for accuracy, conventions, and thoroughness. Grammar Instruction aligned to the English Department Grammar Plan will be given weekly.AssessmentFAIR TestingAll students in the Intensive Reading classes will be required to participate in FAIR testing during all 3 assessment periods. FAIR data will be discussed with students, and students will track their own data in their data folders. Achieve 3000 Level Set Lexile TestStudents in all DLA the Intensive Reading classes will be required to take the Level Set Lexile Test at the beginning of the year, mid-year, and at the end of the year. Lexile data will be discussed with students, and students will track their own Lexile progress in their data folders.Mini AssessmentsStudents will take short mini-assessments based on individual Language Arts Florida Standards every 4 to 6 weeks following the Literacy Instructional Focus Calendar. These Common Assessments were created on USA Test Prep.Students will track their own data in their data folders, make quarterly goals based on assessment results, and write reflections on their reading gains each quarter.Reading Teachers will discuss the results during PLC’s and plan lessons, strategies, extended activities, and remediation strategies based on this data. FSAAll 9th and 10th grade students will take the Florida Standards Assessment in April. RemediationTeachers will use the CARE process to provide remediation based on student strengths and weaknesses determined by diagnostic and formative assessments. Literacy Coach will provide push-in & pull-out small group assistance. Saturday School Tailored for Language Arts Florida Standards practice will be available to all 9th and 10th grade reading students. Saturday School will be available for all reading students. EnrichmentTeachers will use the CARE process to provide enrichment for students who demonstrate mastery of assessed standards. Additional Stretch articles from the Achieve 3000 program will be assigned to students who demonstrate mastery of standards.Field trips and guest speakers will be available for student enrichment activities. ................
