Twelfth Night Reflection Assignment

Twelfth Night Reflection Assignment

Reading and learning is an active process. It is not simply enough to say, “I read Shakespeare!” Rather, to truly learn you need to reflect on what you have read, think critically about it, and relate it to your own world. As such, throughout this unit, you are required to write 3 reflections.

What is a reflection?

A reflection paper cites your reactions, feelings and analysis of literature in a more personal way than in a formal research or analytical essay.

The point is to include your thoughts and reactions to the reading.

Do not use a reflection paper simply to summarize what you have read or done. Also, a reflection paper should not be a free flow of ideas and thoughts.

A reflection paper should be as organized as any other type of formal essay writing. Include a short introduction, perhaps one that describes your expectations before the reading or the experience. You also may want to summarize the conclusions you came to during the process.

The body of your paper should explain the conclusions you have come to and why, basing your conclusions in concrete details from your reading. End the paper with a conclusion that sums up what you got from the reading.

What are my reflections about?

REFLECTION #1 (end of Act 1): Viola is able to dress up and pass as a man. Many other characters seem to act “out of sorts” and not in line with what society expects. What does this imply about gender? In what ways do you make yourself your gender?

REFLECTION #2 (end of Act 3): Many characters struggle to perform their social roles correctly. Both Olivia and Orsino fall in love with the “wrong” person. Malvolio is made to look like a fool. Consider a time when you though or did something and then later learned that it was not gender/class appropriate. What was your experience/feeling/learning?

REFLECTION #3 (end of the play): In the end of the play the world is put back into order. The twins and reunited and weddings take place. Yet some have argued that many characters are actually treated cruelly in Twelfth Night. Analyse the ending: what does the ending imply about gender and class relations? Does this sit right with you? What, in the end, can we learn about gender and class today from the ending of the play?
