Lawn - Watering

The one-two punch of water rationing and lack of rain in June and most of July has hit everyone in Gleneagle hard, but we are hanging in there. All things considered, the landscaping within Sun Mesa still looks good. We have some brown spots in our grass. It’s unavoidable. We are trying to make some adjustments to watering patterns to improve the brown spots. However, there are restrictions that complicate this as you will see below. Let’s hope we get some rain soon!

By now you will have noticed that we have stopped watering the grass outside our stucco fence along Gleneagle Drive. It wasn’t an easy decision. In the May and June newsletters I outlined the need for water conservation by those who get water from the Denver Basin Aquifer, and stated that Donala Water had imposed water rationing and taken other measures. One of the measures, applied to all Gleneagle HOAs, was to increase the cost of water used for irrigation by 20% until the area of irrigated grass was reduced by 25%. At that point, the water cost will drop back to its pre-increase cost. We are trying to attain the 25% reduction of irrigated grass area. The Board believes that this course is not only a virtual mandate, but that it will help position Sun Mesa to deal with future water issues and that it can be attained without detracting from our appearance. The Board’s primary focus is to maintain an appealing landscape within the fenced area of Sun Mesa. Accordingly, our first action was to stop watering the grass outside our stucco fence.

That, however, is not the end of the story. We need to discontinue irrigation to even more grass to hit the goal of a 25% reduction of irrigated area. The additional area required is less than that outside the fence, but still a large area. Our Water Conservation Committee (WCC) and the Board are continuing to explore this. Two members of the WCC recently measured each of the many sod zones; this data is currently being evaluated to identify areas where sod could be removed without detracting from the appearance of Sun Mesa’s landscaping. The Board and WCC agree that the sod along our entryways, main lanes and in the island areas should not be removed.

Obviously, there will be an associated cost to beautify areas where sod has been removed or is no longer irrigated. When the WCC and Board have developed a preliminary plan, we will provide the community with options/cost impact for all affected areas and be open for suggestions to improve the appearance of these areas by any method that does not require sprinkling. Please give us your thoughts (pierce207@). Your feedback is important to us and homeowners will vote on any landscaping change that requires an assessment.

Two things are clear (1) This issue is not going away. In fact, we may face additional water challenges before it is over. (2) We will get through this! Sun Mesa has an appealing Southwestern appearance, and there are many ways we can change the landscape and still look good.

Pet Rules [pic]

Overall, our residents do a good job of complying with the Rules and Regulations regarding pets. Almost all pick up after their pet, and almost all keep their pet on a leash. We need to hit 100% in both areas. This month I want to focus on the leash requirement. Whether your pet is a dog or a gerbil, if its outside it must be on a leash. And you must be able to control it. Remember, pet owners are responsible for any damage or injury caused by their animals.

Speaking of animals, one of our residents had a prolonged visit from a rodent not long ago. This critter decided to set up housekeeping in his window well (resident’s window well, not rodent’s window well). We don’t know what kind of critter this was but suspect it was a ground squirrel. Whatever it was, it moved A LOT of dirt in the process of digging tunnels around and on top of the window well. At least 1/3 of the window well was full of dirt! A pest control guy was dispatched and the rodent is no more. Moral of the story is that if you see any evidence of a furry visitor around your unit take action yourself or call Z&R before we have a thriving prairie dog colony.
