CO-OP

Cooperative Work Experience

Education

A School-to-Career Program

C

O-OP is a planned, supervised work experience program that allows students to use their skills as they enter into a formal, paid-position in a part time position. They earn a paycheck while earning school credit. Students work a minimum of 300 hours for the employer and attend a 40-minute seminar once every 4 days. The seminars focus on job acquisition and retention as well as transferable, career-related skills.

Students may earn a 5th unit of credit in any of the C&TE (Career and Technology Education) areas by completing this course and working in a related job

area.

Benefits of the Work Experience Program

Benefits to the Employer:

( Provides an opportunity to become a partner in selecting, instructing, and

educating young workers in occupational skills and understanding.

( Obtains assistance from the school in instructing and counseling the students during the adjustment period from the school to the job.

Benefits to the Student:

( Provides a realistic learning setting to measure student’s interest and abilities.

( Develops an understanding of employment opportunities and responsibilities through direct on -the -job experience.

( Provides basic information regarding the importance of making informed life choices.

( Develops work habits and attitudes necessary for individual maturity and job competence.

( Provides a laboratory for developing marketable skills, particularly for occupations in which no regular institutional instruction is available.

( Gives meaning and purpose to the theoretical and practical assignments presented in the classroom.

( Provides firsthand experience with other employees, which leads to better understanding of the human factors in employment.

( Provides financial rewards while employable skills and understanding are being acquired.

( Provides an effective test of aptitude and interest in a chosen field of work.

Benefits to the Community:

( Provides an effective way of helping young people become productive citizens in the community.

( Increases the economic health of the state and region as employers meet their needs for workers.

( Provides a method of introducing high school students to local employment opportunities.

( Promotes closer cooperation and understanding between community and schools.

( Encourages students to remain in the home community after graduation and promotes a more stable workforce.

If students participate in paid employment their junior year and earn credit through CO-OP, an Advanced CO-OP course is offered to allow them to continue to earn credit for work experience their senior year. This second credit would be an elective and would not count toward a Business sequence.
