Literary Analysis of Film



AFI’s Top 100 Research Project

Directions: Each student will randomly choose and analyze a film from the American Film Institute's Top 100 list by researching and reporting through individual writing. By starting the year with this project the class will immediately understand the importance of scholarly research, research tools and the academic quality of the course.

THE PROCESS:

• You will be randomly assigned a film from the AFI’s Top 100.

• Begin the preliminary research for the film. Find out basic information such as cast, crew, screenwriter, producer, etc. We will look this up as a class using for this.

• View the film. View it several times if needed. You must return the film on the assigned date.

• Pick at least three aspects of the film to specifically report on. Start out by reading reviews and determining what is most important about the film and what the critics have said about it.

• Create a 5 paragraph review of the film.

REQUIREMENTS:

• 3 different film reviews on the film from recognized film critics, such as Roger Ebert, David Ansen, Bosley Crowther, Judith Crist, Leonard Maltin, etc. Please nothing from Rotten Tomatoes. A works cited page must be turned in (Four sources: three reviews and the film itself are cited)

• 5 paragraph review of the film. Your review should include specific aspects including acting, plot, characters, direction, and ending with your personal feeling on the film itself. There should be at least three (3) citations from your sources to corroborate your ideas.

• All assignments should be typed, double spaced, in Times New Roman, size 12 font.

Due Dates:

• View and return film by Friday September 25

• Three sources and film citations due Wednesday September 30

• Short presentations of film start Friday October 9
