Science Bowl Information

The Science Bowl Competition is an event in which students compete in a 'Toss Up/ Bonus' question format. The competition involves a Junior (7th - 9th grades) and a Senior (10th - 12th grades) division. What makes this competition unique is the requirement that at least 50% of the competing team members must be African-American and that 20% of the questions are about African - American Inventors, Scientists and Engineers.

A minimum of three members, two of which must be African-American, may compete in the local competition; however, four member teams must compete in the national competition. Four member teams are preferred. An alternate is allowed for the local competition. However, the ethnicity requirement of a competing team must be 50% African-American.

The Junior Division is for students in grades 7-9; the Senior Division is for students in grades 10-12. Middle, Junior High and High Schools may enter two teams in the Science Bowl competition.

The science bowl will feature single elimination competition between either two or three four-member teams (depending on the number of schools participating) answering questions in the science bowl areas listed on page 2.

• A panel of judges will judge the science bowl competition. The decisions of the judges will be final.

• A moderator will read the science bowl questions.

The first, second, and third place winners will receive a medallion and a Certificate of Award. A Grand Prize winner will be selected from the first place winners in each division. Grand Prize and first place winners will be invited to the 26th Annual NOBCChE Student and Teacher Awards Banquet in June 2007.
