Technical Center (TC), Room 136The theme for African American History Month 2012 isAfrican American Women in American History and CultureStereotypes of race, class and gender came into sharp public focus when Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in the workplace at his hearings to become Supreme Court Justice.? This watershed historical moment divided Americans along many lines.? This program, introduced by Dr. Michelle T. Scott, Chief Diversity Officer, Office of Equity and Diversity, and facilitated by Dr. Alonzo Smith, History, and Professor Genevieve Carminati, Women's Studies Program, will discuss and examine the historical and cultural implications of the Hill/Thomas controversy.? This presentation will include film clips and excerpts from "African American Women in Defense of Ourselves" (1991), a full-page statement in the New York Times signed by 1,603 Black women; "Becoming the Third Wave" (1992), by Rebecca Walker, giving a young woman's view; and "Black Women Still in Defense of Ourselves" (2011), an updated statement by Kimberle Williams Crenshaw, on the 20th anniversary of the hearings.?
