This handbook is designed as a guide to assist student and parents in an understanding of Odenville Middle School policies and standards as they relate to the everyday operation of our school. This handbook is provided as a supplement and an addendum to the St. Clair County Code of Conduct that is provided by the St. Clair County school system.

Absences:

Regular school attendance is required by law and is vital to a student’s success in school. Please note that the St. Clair County Board of Education has an attendance policy for all students. This policy has a direct impact on whether a student passes or fails. Excuses for absences are due no later than 3 days from last day of absence and will not be accepted after the grace period. Please refer to the St. Clair County Code of Student Conduct to see the specifics of this policy. ALL EXCUSES MUST BE TURNED IN TO THE OFFICE.

Please note:

All medical absence documentation must be on original watermarked stationary from the doctor’s office and must contain the doctor’s signature. Photocopied excuses will no longer be accepted as medical documentation under any circumstances.

Appointments:

Parents are urged to set up dentist, doctor, and other appointments during school breaks or after school as much as possible. In cases when this is not possible, the students should always bring a signed medical excuse from the doctor, dentist, etc.

Arrival:

School begins promptly at 7:45 each day. Students are tardy at 7:55. Students arriving at or after 7:55 MUST be signed in by a parent in the office. Students should not arrive before 7:15 a.m. To ensure your child’s safety, please do not drop your child off earlier than 7:15. Upon arrival, students that eat breakfast need to report to cafeteria and all other students report to the gym. Students will remain in the cafeteria until they are escorted from the cafeteria by a member of the OMS faculty. Upon dismissal from the cafeteria, students will go to their lockers, visit the school store if needed, and then move to their assigned room. Students are not allowed to visit other classrooms.

Athletics:

All students who wish to participate in any extra-curricular activities must meet the requirements set forth

by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA), the State of Alabama and the St. Clair County Board of Education (see student code of conduct). All students who participate in extra-curricular activities are representatives of our school and as such are expected to show good character, maintain high academic

standards, and display a positive and commendable attitude. The coach, sponsor, athletic director, and/or

school administrators will make decisions regarding the suspension of any player from games, practices, or membership on the team. Failure to meet these requirements will eliminate a student from eligibility. All athletes are subject to random drug screening.

According to the AHSAA (Alabama High School Athletic Association), the OMS principal will have the final

word on all decisions regarding all aspects of extra-curricular participation by a school and/or student in all sports. This applies to every student enrolled in Odenville Middle School, in all grades, and in all sports.

Auditorium:

We are very proud of our auditorium and ask your help in keeping it in great condition. Please remember and observe the following:

No food or drinks are allowed in the auditorium.

Students are not to be in the auditorium unless under the direct supervision of an OMS faculty member.

No one is to touch the curtains on the stage or the windows for any reason.

Students are not to be on the stage unless under the direction of an OMS faculty member.

Neither students, nor teachers are to roll the chair racks out onto the auditorium floor. The racks are too heavy and scar the hardwood floor. Racks are to remain in the back offset of the auditorium unless you have specific permission from Mrs. Carroll to move them.

Anyone wishing to use the auditorium must secure permission from Mr. Cook before doing so.

After use, the auditorium is to be put back in order – chairs properly stored on racks, floor swept, doors and windows checked and locked, and lights turned off.

Awards Assembly:

An awards assembly will be held at the end of each semester to honor “A” Honor Roll, “AB” Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, and Citizenship. Homeroom teachers will present certificates. Other awards may be added to these for outstanding performance in different areas. The awards assembly for the first semester will be held after Christmas break. The awards assembly for 6th and 7th grade students for second semester will be held during the last week of school. (See calendar in back for time and date). Eighth graders will receive all of their second semester awards at the 8th grade commencement exercises.

Backpacks:

Backpacks are not required of any student at OMS. However, because of safety reasons, any student who brings a backpack is required to store the backpack in their locker upon entering school. Students are not allowed to have rolling backpacks. (See the St. Clair County Student Code of Conduct) The only exception to this is a documented medical condition that prohibits one from being able to carry a regular backpack. This exception must have written authorization from the doctor and the principal before bringing the rolling backpack to school. Athletic bags must be dropped off in a designated area upon entering the building and left until the end of the school day.

Bicycle Riders:

Students are strongly discouraged from riding bicycles to school. Due to the enormous amount of traffic around the school, conditions are unsafe for bicyclists. Parents should be aware that neither Odenville Middle School nor any entity of the St. Clair County Board of Education gives permission for students to ride their bicycle to school, nor will either party assume the liability and/or responsibility for students who ride their bicycles to and from school. Neither Odenville Middle School nor any entity of the St. Clair County Board of Education will assume any liability or responsibility for any damage or theft to a bicycle while on school grounds.

Book/Magazine Orders:

Book orders are sometimes taken in certain classrooms, (i.e. Scholastic Books). If your child has such an order, DO NOT make checks payable to the teacher. Checks should be made payable to the school or directly to the book company only. Never send cash for these types of orders.

Break:

Break is given to provide students a nutritional boost during the day. Break change is not provided through the office therefore students should bring correct change. No food or drink is to be taken out of the break area.

Breakfast:

Breakfast will be served each morning in the cafeteria at Odenville Elementary School. Students who wish to eat breakfast must go directly from the bus or car to the cafeteria. No student will be permitted to arrive at OMS and then walk over to the cafeteria. All OMS students who go to breakfast will return as a group to the middle school with the teacher who is on breakfast duty. STUDENTS MUST NEVER LEAVE THE CAFETERIA UNSUPERVISED! All food and drinks are to be consumed in the cafeteria. No food or drink is allowed to leave the cafeteria. OMS students must sit in the area designated for OMS students. Middle school students are not allowed to sit with elementary students nor vice versa. Car riders must arrive in the cafeteria before 7:35 in order to eat breakfast.

Cell Phones:

Cell phone usage is allowed under the guidelines set forth in the St. Clair County Code of Student Conduct. Cell phones are brought to school at the students own risk. It is the students’ responsibility to keep up with their cell phone and use it properly. OMS will not be responsible for any loss, theft, or damage that occurs to any such items brought to school by students.

Cheating:

Cheating in any form will not be tolerated. Cheating will result in a grade of zero on the work on which the cheating occurred and the appropriate disciplinary action will be followed.

Checking In/Checking Out:

Parents are urged to leave their children in school all day. Doctor and dentist appointments should be scheduled outside of school hours whenever possible. If a student is to be checked out, a parent or someone on that student’s checkout list must come to the front office, present proper picture identification, and sign the student out. In rare and/or emergency instances, someone other than those on the student’s checkout list

must pick up a student. In such cases, the parent must provide a written note containing the date the student

is to be picked up, the name of the individual who will be picking up the child, and a telephone number at which this can be verified with a parent or guardian. All changes must be in writing. FOR OUR STUDENT’S SAFETY, NO CHANGES WILL BE MADE OVER THE TELEPHONE. Although this is sometimes inconvenient, these precautions are taken for the safety and security of our students and your child.

*Remember: Checkouts do count against perfect attendance and count as an absence for any classes missed.

OMS is glad to accept checks for payment of school expenses as long as the following information is on the check:

Please be aware that OMS adheres to strict local, state, and federal auditing guidelines. Check writing guidelines are as follows:

Checks must be made out to: Odenville Middle School

Checks must be for the exact amount of the expense

Checks must contain the information listed above

No more than two checks can be written by one person for a single item/expense

All returned checks are processed through an outside agency for collection and all check writing privileges at OMS will be terminated.

OMS cannot cash checks for students, parents, or teachers.

Conduct:

Everyone at OMS is expected to behave properly while at school. Students will follow the St. Clair County Code of Conduct. Failure to follow these rules will result in the consequences listed in the Code

of Conduct.

Conferences with Administrators:

Sometimes it may be necessary for a parent/guardian to meet with the principal or the assistant principal about an issue concerning your child. If the concern is about a classroom or grading issue, the parent should schedule a conference with the teacher first. If the parent still has further concerns and wishes to speak with a school administrator, we are always eager to meet with parents. However, to meet everyone’s schedule, all conferences must be scheduled by appointment. By doing so, the school administrator, or teacher with whom you wish to speak, will be available and will be able to assist you with your problem in a more efficient manner. Any parent wishing to schedule a conference should call the school at 629-2280 to do so.

Conferences with Teachers:

Parents are encouraged to conference with teachers. The staff of OMS is always glad to meet with parents to discuss any question or concern that may arise. However, to maintain security teachers are unavailable to meet with parents prior to the beginning of school in the morning because of supervisory duties. To protect instructional time, teachers are not allowed to leave their classes to meet with a parent under any

circumstances. Therefore, any parent wishing to meet with a teacher should call the school at 629-2280 to schedule a conference. All conferences must be scheduled in advance. In order to protect instructional time for all students, absolutely no conferences will be made before school or during class time.

Under no circumstances will teachers leave their classrooms to meet with a parent!

Detention:

Detention may be held at OMS as one of our disciplinary measures. When a student is assigned to detention of any kind he/she is expected to attend. Failure to attend detention, and/or continued and/or habitual assignment of detention will result in a student receiving a more serious consequence such as Saturday

School, Alternative School, etc.

Morning Detention: The assistant principal or classroom teacher may assign detention to students that display classroom misconduct. Detention will be held with the assistant principal or his designee on Tuesday and/or Thursday morning from 6:45 to 7:45am. Parents are responsible for transporting his/her child to the school at this time.

Afternoon Detention: The classroom teacher and/or a school administrator may assign detention to any student who displays classroom misconduct. Detention will be held after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday from 3:15 until 4:15 pm. Parents are responsible for picking up his/her child from school on time. Students who are not picked up by 4:15pm will be sent to after school care and the parent will be responsible for paying the cost of that service.

In-School Suspension: A school administrator may assign in-school suspension to any student for disciplinary reasons. The in-school suspension may be for multiple days. The student will be expected to complete all assigned work form his/her classroom teacher in addition to any other

work deemed necessary. Parents will be notified in writing if their child has been assigned to ISS.

Saturday School: Saturday School is assigned to a student for various Class I and Class II violations and for students who have been assigned numerous times to morning/afternoon detention and/or ISS. Habitual assignments to any detention will result in a Saturday School or Alternative School placement.

Donations:

Enrichment classes are a very important part of the OMS curriculum. Since we receive no funding for any of the enrichment classes, a small monetary donation is requested from parents. This helps offset the cost of the expense of these programs. Donations are the only means by which there is funding for our enrichment classes and by which classroom supplies can be purchased. We appreciate your support of our programs through this tax-deductible donation (keep your receipt). We hope that you will continue your generous support of these OMS programs so we can continue to provide them for your child.

The total donation amount requested by OMS for the entire school year is $50.00.

Doors:

Odenville Middle School students are NEVER allowed to open an outside door to allow entrance by anyone. This is a violation of our safe school policy and any violators will be disciplined accordingly. Parents and other visitors should never try to enter the building at any door other than the front main entrance and only during authorized school hours.

Dress Code:

(See the St. Clair County Code of Student Conduct)

The student dress code will be strictly enforced as follows:

▪ Students in violation of the dress code policy will be assigned morning or afternoon detention at the assistant principal’s discretion on the first referral.

▪ A second referral for failure to attend the assigned detention and/or failure to comply with the dress code policy will result in assignment to ISS.

The third referral for dress code violation and/or failure to attend ISS will result in Saturday School.

▪ After the third dress code violation or failure to attend required Saturday school, the offense will be deemed insubordination and the student will receive an out of school suspension. Two suspensions will result in a referral to juvenile court.

Drivers Permit Application:

Applications for a driver’s permit can be obtained by request from the counselor. Students should make the request at least three days prior to the time that the application form is needed.

***Remember – OMS students are not allowed to drive any kind of motorized vehicle to school regardless of age.

Emergency Information:

Accurate information that includes telephone numbers where parents can be reached in case of an emergency is extremely important. Please inform the school if any of the information on your child’s information sheet changes at any time during the school year.

Elections:

Elections at OMS will follow the general guidelines below or the specific guidelines of the organization for which the election is being held. Students interested in any elected position must meet the same eligibility, and grade requirements (a 70 overall average) as those students who participate in extra-curricular activities. Students must also have a commendable attitude and an acceptable discipline record. Additional

election requirements may be specified by the sponsoring organization.

For each school election, every OMS student will receive a ballot listing the eligible participants. Each OMS student is allowed one vote. A candidate must receive 51% of the total vote to be elected to a position. If a candidate does not receive 51% of the vote, a runoff election will be held between the top two candidates. All elected parties will appear in the yearbook for the current school year. Elections for 2014 - 2015 will be as follows:

Class Favorite: Grades 6 - 8 will elect one girl and one boy to represent their respective grade as “Class Favorite.”

Class Officers: Class officer elections take place during the first weeks of the new school year.

Mr. and Miss Odenville Middle School - grades 6 - 8 will elect one boy and one girl (from the 8th grade

class) to represent OMS as “Mr. and Miss Odenville Middle.”

Who’s Who – grades 6 - 8 will elect one boy and one girl to each of the categories in “Who’s Who.”

Students may be elected to only one category in “Who’s Who.” However, a student may be elected to “Who’s Who” and be elected as a “Class Favorite.” The eight “Who’s Who” categories are as follows:

Extra-Curricular Activities:

Extra-curricular activities include all activities, sponsored by the school, which take place outside of the regular academic curriculum. This includes, but is not limited to, participation in all sports, band, cheerleading, etc. The Alabama State Department of Education sets forth requirements that must be met by all students who wish to participate in extra-curricular activities (see St. Clair County Code of Student Conduct). Students that participate in extra-curricular activities are subject to random drug screening.

Extra-Curricular Clubs and Organizations:

All club and organization participation is determined by the membership standards and the required guidelines listed in the extra-curricular activities sections. Continued participation in any club will be decided by the club sponsor and school administration. Any student who receives an out of school suspension, alternative school placement, or day school placement will lose the privilege of continued participation in a group, and/or team. Clubs and organizations, along with the sponsor of that organization may change as interest and/or need dictates.

Art Club – sponsor Mrs. Lisa V. Brown:

Students in grades 6 – 8 are eligible. Students will have weekly meetings. These meetings are arranged by the sponsor. The art club will complete a variety of projects throughout the year.

Athletics:

All students who wish to participate in any extra-curricular activities must meet the requirements set forth by the State of Alabama and the St. Clair County Board of Education (see student code of conduct). All student athletes are representatives of our school and as such are expected to show good character, maintain high academic standards, and display a positive and commendable attitude. The coach, sponsor, athletic director, and/or school administrators will make decisions regarding any player suspension from games and/or practices. Failure to meet these requirements will eliminate a student from eligibility. * The OMS principal will have the final word on all decisions regarding extra-curricular participation by an Odenville Middle School and Odenville Middle School students (as per Alabama High School Athletic Association guidelines).

Chess Club:

Students in grades 6 – 8 are eligible. Students will meet once per week and will learn how to play chess. The chess club is open to advanced and beginning players. The chess team will compete in various county and district competitions.

Choir – sponsor Mrs. Trina Waid:

Students are chosen to participate in the choir, based on performance and/or referral from previous music or choir teacher. his group performs throughout the year and participates in various competitions.

Junior Beta Club – sponsors Mrs. Betty Gunn and Mrs. Susan Nicely:

Membership in the OMS Junior Beta Club is selective and is determined by guidelines set forth for all St. Clair County schools (see St. Clair County Code of Student Conduct).

Junior Thespian Society (Drama Club) – sponsor Ms. Tammy Williams:

The OMS drama club offers students in grades 6 – 8 an opportunity to participate in the production of theatrical performances. Students are involved in every aspect of theatre including set design and construction, costuming, acting, singing, and choreography. During performance season, practices usually take place two or three afternoons per week after school until approximately 5:00 p.m., depending upon need. The time from audition to play night is typically 4 to 6 weeks, but depends upon the complexity of the script. The Junior Thespian Society produces at least two theatrical productions a year. Typically, there is a performance in the fall and another production in the spring. Dues for the Junior Thespian Society are $10.00 per year. The Junior Thespian Club sponsors the school-wide talent show during the year.

❖ Saints for Christ – sponsor Ms. Trina Waid:

Students wishing to participate in Saints for Christ will meet each Wednesday morning, before school, in the sponsor’s classroom.

Science Club – sponsors Mrs. Heather Baruch, Mr. Nick Messier and Mr. Joe Carroll:

Eligibility requirements and meeting times will be announced later by the sponsors. The science club is in charge of any school-wide Science Fair and Earth Day activities. Earth day activities may vary dependent upon the availability of earth day activities offered in and around our area.

❖ Sports – sponsors Mrs. Candice Byers (Cheerleading), Coach Brandon Easterwood (Boys’ Basketball), Coach Nathan Massey (Archery), Coach Billy Morris (Football and Baseball), Coach Jared Peoples (Girls’ Basketball and Girls’ Softball), Coach Deb Turney (Girls’ Volleyball):

Students are required to meet all eligibility requirements as set forth by the Alabama High School

Athletic Association. (See athletics)

❖ Student Government Association – sponsor Ms. Tammy Williams:

The SGA is the official governing body that represents the students of Odenville Middle School. Their role is to promote the mission and vision of the school and to enhance the atmosphere within the school environment. The SGA will meet with the principal and/or assistant principal to discuss

policies, activities, and discipline that affects the students at OMS. In addition, the SGA is involved in various activities including several fundraising and philanthropic endeavors during the year. The SGA also participates in the annual Student Government Association Convention. The offices that comprise the Odenville Middle School Student Government Association and the electoral process for membership are outlined below:

President elected from the 8th grade

Vice President elected from the 7th grade

Secretary elected from the 7th or 8th grade

Treasurer elected from the 7th or 8th grade

Parliamentarian elected from the 7th or 8th

Historian/Photographer elected from the 7th or 8th grade

Senators – (3 each grade) selected from grade 7 and 8

Senators - (3 each) selected from OIS and MAES

The candidates for the offices listed above will be elected through a process that includes:

(1) The vote of the student body 25%

(2) The vote of the faculty 25%

(3) An interview process before a panel of judges 25%

(4) A speech before the student body, scored by a panel of judges 25%

In addition to the officers listed above, there will be representatives, called the “leadership team” that are chosen by application. This will comprise the Student Government Association of Odenville Middle School.

The SGA elections are held at the end of the year for the upcoming school year. The Student Government Association will conduct registration and elections for class officers during the first week/weeks of the new school year.

All SGA members are expected to represent OMS with a commendable attitude, good citizenship, and high academic standards. Failure to exhibit these characteristics will result in suspension and/or removal from office in the SGA. This removal will be done at the discretion of the sponsor and/or principal of OMS.

❖ Yearbook Staff – sponsor Mr. Mike Collins:

OMS has its own yearbook. The yearbook features OMS students, clubs, athletics, and activities. The yearbook staff is comprised of OMS students and faculty members. The sale for the yearbook takes place throughout the school year. Because yearbooks include end-of-the-year events, the yearbooks are not available for pick-up by students until September or October of the following year.

For eighth grade students who have moved to the high school, yearbooks will be delivered to SCCHS upon their

arrival at OMS in either September or October. Yearbooks must be pre-ordered. The price for yearbooks has not been determined at this time.

Field Trips:

The events in this category are an important part of the educational process. Some field trips may have a fee attached. These fees are to be paid during the student’s homeroom and will be receipted by the homeroom teacher. The money for field trips will not be taken in the office or at any other time of the day. Field trip money will not be accepted after the established deadline that has been set. Calls will not be made for parents to bring permission slips or money to pay for a field trip. Any time students are taken off campus, rules and regulations must apply to make the trip safe and pleasant for everyone involved. (See St. Clair County Code of Student Conduct for field trip rules and regulations). Even though a student may have paid for an activity, failure to maintain proper grades and conduct by the student, can result in that student being denied the opportunity to participate in a field trip activity. The privilege to participate in a field trip will be determined by the principal. A student with any of the following disciplinary actions will not be given the opportunity to participate in any field trip activities: Class I offenses - 3 or more, Class II - 3 or more Class II/or any combination of Class I and II totaling 3 referrals, Class III - 2 or more Class III/ or 1 Class III and 1 or more Class II or Class I totaling 2 referrals, Class IV - 1 or more, Class V - 1 or more.

A refund of all or part of any fee will be possible only if those monies are still available to the school. Otherwise, no refund will be made. Any tickets purchased for field trips are non-refundable.

Food and Drinks:

Food and drinks are not allowed in the auditorium, classrooms, hallways, or gym areas of Odenville Middle School.

Games/Electronics/Collectibles:

Recreational items such as toys, yo-yos, stuffed animals, electronic games, radios, IPods, MP3 players, baseball/collectible cards of any kind, laser pointers or any other type of recreational item that is brought to school by a student for the purpose of play will be confiscated and will only be returned to the parent. OMS will not be responsible for any loss or damage that occurs to any such items brought to school by students, nor will administrative and/or instructional time be delegated to finding lost or stolen articles. THESE ITEMS SHOULD NOT BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL.

Gum and sticky candy:

The use of gum and sticky candy such as Starburst, Skittles, is prohibited because of the residue that is left on the floors, walls, under the desks, and on the bottom of everyone’s shoes. Do not bring these items for break, or for lunch.

Gymnasium:

We are proud of our gymnasium and strive to keep it in the best condition possible. The following rules are to be observed in our gymnasium:

❖ No food or drinks are allowed in the gym for any reason.

❖ Students are not to be in the gymnasium unless under the direct supervision of an OMS faculty member.

❖ No one should walk on the court in the gymnasium; always walk around the edge of the court.

❖ Tennis shoes must always be worn during PE classes.

❖ After use, the gymnasium is to restore to its proper order – chairs removed if used, bleachers and floor swept, doors checked and locked, fans and lights turned off.

Hallway Behavior:

It is the student’s responsibility to secure a hall pass before leaving the classroom. Students in the hall without a pass will be disciplined according to the code of conduct. Students should be in the halls only at the beginning and close of school and while moving from one class to another, unless they have special permission or special duties that require them to be there. Students are asked to be courteous at all time and use proper hallway behavior. Running, shouting, and pushing in the hallways are not permitted. Students are to move in a single file and always walk on the right hand side of the hall.

INOW Home Portal:

This is OMS’s student information system. All materials, including user ID’s and passwords for accessing the system will be sent home in the first week of school and should be kept confidential. Individual student information such as grades, discipline referrals, attendance, and homework, etc., can be viewed via computer on “Home Portal.” If one finds that the “Home Portal” system is not working properly, please call the school and report this to the receptionist.

Lockers:

Lockers are available for a rental fee of $15.00 per student. Lockers are the property of OMS and OMS retains all rights to the lockers. The student who rents the locker is responsible for the care of that locker and the damage assessment ($25.00 or more) if anything is done to that locker. Students are not to mark on lockers, or place stickers, glue or any other material in or on the locker that will deface the locker in any way.

Students are not to kick or hit lockers. Students are not to share a locker. The overcrowding that results from sharing a locker often damages the locking mechanism on the locker.

Loitering:

Students are not to remain on school grounds when school is not in session, unless they are under the direct supervision of an OMS faculty member. Any student remaining on the school campus after 3:15 pm must be here at the request of, and under the direct supervision of, a member of the OMS faculty. Any student found on the school grounds before or after school hours will be turned over to local law enforcement officers for trespassing. Skaters, skateboarders, bicycle riders, and rollerbladers are not permitted on the OMS campus at any time before, during, or after school, nor on the weekends.

Lunch:

A courteous attitude should be maintained in the lunchroom at all times. Students may talk during lunch, but converse in a low tone. Because students perform better academically with proper nutrition, all students at OMS are required to eat lunch. This can be a lunch from the lunchroom or a lunch brought from home. Food cannot be brought in to students from outside eating establishments (per federal “Child Nutrition Program” guidelines).

Lunch Forms:

All OMS students are given a lunch form at the beginning of school or at the time of enrollment. We ask that parents take just a few moments to fill out the form and return it to the school. If you wish, you may return it in a sealed envelope marked “lunchroom” and it will be given directly to them. These forms are extremely important, as they are the means by which some funds are allocated to our school. We appreciate you taking the time to fill them out and return them to our school. All lunch forms should be returned within two weeks of the first day of school. If during the year a lunch form is needed, please come by or call the school office @ 629-2280 and we will send a form home with your child.

OES and OIS:

OMS students are not allowed to be on the campuses of our adjacent schools for any reason. OMS students are not allowed to walk younger siblings to or from class or to visit the elementary or intermediate school. OMS students are not allowed to unload from the bus or cars at any point other than areas specifically designated as middle school loading/unloading areas.

Parties:

Classroom parties are limited and must be approved by the principal prior to being held. If approved, only commercially purchased and sealed refreshments may be brought to school for a class party. The teacher will give out the refreshments at the scheduled time.

Physical Education:

PE is required by the Alabama State Department of Education. Your child will be expected to go to physical education every day and make every effort to participate. Students who have a physical injury or other health problem, which requires them to be excused for PE class, must have a doctor’s written authorization to be excused and will be given an alternative assignment for their grade. The doctor’s excuse must be an original, not a photocopy and must specify the length of time that the child is to be excused from PE. If this physical problem is on going, a doctor’s excuse is required at the beginning of each new school year.

Report Cards:

Report cards and progress reports are issued to every student at 4½-week intervals. The final report card for the year will contain the report card, summer school information, supply lists for the next year, newsletters, and many other handouts. This report card will be handed out on the day of the awards assembly for 6th and 7th grade students and at commencement exercises for 8th grade students. Report cards will not be given out early.

School Security:

OMS has a security plan on file with the Alabama State Department of Education. This policy makes student and faculty security and safety, along with the protection of instructional time, the top priority. For this reason, the following guidelines apply:

no one, including parents and visitors, are allowed to visit classrooms without permission from the school administration

OMS students, faculty, and staff are the only authorized persons allowed in the school building during school hours without special permission and a visitor’s badge.

It is required that every visitor enter the building by the front door only.

Upon entering, it is required that everyone sign in at the front office, state the purpose of the visit, and obtain a visitor’s pass.

If any student should ever see a stranger who is not wearing a school name badge, in the building, cafeteria, or on the OMS campus, the student should report this to a teacher or principal immediately.

Students are NEVER to open the outside doors to allow admittance into the building by anyone.

Opening of the outside doors by students is a violation of the school security code and subject to disciplinary action.

Failure to follow proper security guidelines and procedures by visitors, students, faculty, and staff is a violation of the school and state security policy and will be handled accordingly.

Shoes:

Shoes are to be worn at all times. No student is allowed to go barefoot for any reason. It is important that parents understand that although certain shoes are allowed by the dress code, these may not be the most appropriate shoes for school. Health and safety should always be taken into consideration when choosing shoes for school. Since PE is a required course, students should always have a pair of tennis shoes at school for this class. Due to safety concerns, slides and open toed shoes should not be worn to PE.

Snack Break:

Break is a privilege and may be discontinued if students behave inappropriately.

Break is restricted to the break area.

No food or drinks will be permitted outside of the break area, except by special permission from the principal. Only the trash receptacles in the break areas are to be used for trash during break.

Students should never take break items back to their classrooms or lockers.

Students are only allowed in the break area during their designated break time and only when their designated teacher is present.

Correct change for break should be brought to school if possible. The school office does not make change for break.

Money should not be placed in machines marked “Out of Order.”

Students may purchase snack items only during their break time.

Any student found vandalizing break machines in any way, this includes taking extra snacks, and/or drinks without paying for them, will be disciplined according to the St. Clair County Code of Student Conduct.

Social Functions:

Social functions play an important role in a young person’s developmental process. Social functions that may take place at OMS include dances, Fall Festival, Spring Fling, and any other social or “fun” activities. Since these activities are viewed as a “special” event, they are considered an earned privilege for students. A student may be denied the opportunity to participate in any social function if his/her behavior warrants such a denial.

Any student who has been assigned an alternative school placement during the school year will NOT be eligible to participate in OMS social functions

A student with any of the following disciplinary actions will be denied the opportunity to attend OMS social functions:

Even though a student may have paid for an activity, failure to maintain proper grades and conduct by the student, can result in that student being denied the opportunity to participate in an OMS social function. The privilege of a student to participate in an OMS social function will be determined by the principal. A refund of all or part of any fee will be possible only if those monies are still available to the school. Otherwise, no refund will be made. **Any student may be denied the opportunity to attend any school related event, at any time, if the principal deems that the student’s behavior warrants such a denial. The principal has the sole discretion as to the criterion for each special event.

Surveillance Equipment:

Surveillance cameras are installed on the campus and inside the structure of OMS for security purposes. Anyone entering the campus or the school building will be monitored. Cameras tape 24 hours per day/ 7 days per week/ 365 days a year. Anyone tampering with any of the surveillance equipment will be in violation of the school security policy and will be reported to local law enforcement authorities.

Telephone:

The school telephone is for business and emergency use only. Students may not use the telephone except in an emergency and only after obtaining permission from the teacher or principal. Students will not be called from class to receive telephone calls. If a message is left for a student, every effort will be made to assure that

Transportation:

Parents should make all transportation arrangements with their child before the child comes to school each day. To protect our students, no transportation changes will be made over the telephone – all transportation changes must be in writing from the parent and/or legal guardian.

Visitors:

Visitors are permitted on campus during school hours only when they have specific business with school administrative staff. Exceptions will be made for school functions that take place during school hours, provided the administrative staff has approved the visit. All visitors must enter through the front door and report to the office for a name badge before going to any classroom. (See “Security” for more information on this topic)

Work Permits:

Any student wishing to obtain a work permit should speak to the counselor. The counselor will arrange with the high school to obtain a work permit for the student.
