It is also in a state of flux regarding the education, training, and credentials of professionals who apply the practice of Sport & Exercise theoretical constructs, principles, and techniques in their respective real world settings. This is an era of increased interest in providing a cutting – edge combination of Sport and Behavioral Sciences in both research and application with athletes, coaches, and the fitness industry. Leadership and character development have also become increasingly important in our current culture. Life skills, confidence, mental toughness, good sportsmanship, personal growth, building positive relationships and the ability to lead are all important aspects of competition, as well as successfully navigating through life. The Exercise/Sport Psychology and Leadership (ESPL) SIG is unique and necessary for many reasons. These are addressed in specific categories as follows: General OverviewThere is no other NSCA SIG that addresses or educates NSCA Certified Coaches, Trainers, and /or Members on Sport Psychology Theories, Principals, Research, Applied Techniques and Practices. There is no other NSCA SIG that addresses or educates NSCA Certified Coaches, Trainers, and /or Members about or how to apply Mental Conditioning / Mental Skills Training (MST) for Peak Performance. There is no other NSCA SIG that addresses or educates NSCA Certified Coaches, Trainers, and /or Members how to handle the psychological and emotional aspects of injury, injury prevention, surgery, rehabilitation, the mind-body healing process, pain management, return to play anxiety, or career ending injuries. There is no other NSCA SIG that addresses or educates NSCA Certified Coaches, Trainers, and /or Members about the psychological / emotional needs, demands, roles, and dynamics that occur in a team environment and /or how to successfully navigate within their specific roles, tasks, and boundaries. There is no other NSAC SIG that addresses or educates NSCA Certified Coaches, Trainers, and /or Members about the psychological / emotional needs, demands, roles, and dynamics of a teams coaching staff and how to successfully navigate within their specific roles, tasks, and boundaries. PURPOSE STATEMENTAs the NSCA represents the worldwide authority on strength and conditioning research, the Exercise/Sport Psychology and Leadership SIG (ESPL) will support and disseminate research based knowledge and its practical application to improve athlete performance and fitness specifically related to concepts associated with sport and exercise psychology. The SIG will also discuss leadership development in coaches and personal trainers, sharpening the relationships between coaches, strength coaches, athletic directors, interns, graduate students. Other increased benefits will enable our membership to better train and lead student-athletes, special populations, military personnel, firemen/women, police and general population. Some of the areas of concentration of study by this SIG will include motivation, socialization, mental imagery, goal setting, leadership, focus, stress management and arousal, depression, anxiety, concentration, visualization, adherence to exercise, rehabilitation, and theories that support these constructs.GOALS FOR THE ESPL SIGThe goal of the SIG is to research and discuss behavioral patterns prevalent in the athletic and fitness industry. These behaviors include but are not limited to motivation, mental focus, stress and depression. How do we recognize barriers that hinder the success of an athlete or client? A forum that provides research and discussion would contribute to the communication and understanding of the team of professionals associated with our athletes and clients. Our short-term plan would be to openly discuss how to sharpen the relationship between coaches, athletic directors, interns, graduate students, working student-athletes, special populations and the client-trainer relationship. The NSCA Exercise and Sport Psychology/Leadership Special Interest Group is unique and necessary because it recognizes the mental aspect of training. Developing the communication and leadership skills of strength coaches, athletic trainers and personal trainers will enhance their relationship with coaches, athletic directors, athletes, and clients. Improving motivation and performance is the ultimate goal of the entire team of professionals. The NSCA mission of utilizing proper strength training and conditioning that will improve athletic performance and fitness will be enhanced by the principles of exercise and sports psychology through research and discussion. NSCA members will be offered a forum that will aid them in increasing motivation and performance as well as identifying motivation and performance barriers such as stress and depression.SPECIFIC GROUPS, GOALS & OBEJCTIVESNSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Coaches (CSCS)NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Coaches (CSCS) are at the forefront as applied professionals employed by teams and organizations to train athletes to perform at their peak. The required education for NSCA Certification as a Strength & Conditioning Coach (CSCS) is based upon the knowledge and application of the physical aspects of training / conditioning athletes. The NSCA Exercise/Sport Psychology and Leadership (ESPL) SIG will enhance the mission of the NSCA by bridging the gap between mental training and its effects on strength and conditioning. Little attention is paid to the enormous affect that the mind has on all aspects of performance. There is a lack of Sport Psychology / Mental Skills Training for NSCACertified Strength Coaches (CSCS) leaving a gap to pursue their own knowledge in this area in order to provide an additional edge beyond traditional conditioning programs. This leaves a huge gap in the knowledge, skill, ability, and applied practical experience applying these Mental / Psychological Strategies using consistent standard training methods for these purposes. The lack of knowledge and formal education and training in Sport & Exercise Psychology topics, techniques, solid standard application may result in:Increasing poor performance instead of improving it. No improvement in performance at all, resulting in a negative perception regarding using Sport Psychology / Mental Conditioning Skills & Techniques. This leads coaches, players, and teams to refuse, ridicule, and /or deny the using any Sport Psychology/ Mental Conditioning Training, Skills, or applications would be helpful.Improperly educating and training athletes may also result in injury while attempting to implement a specific applied Sport Psychology / Mental Skills Technique.Improperly assessing/ and or being aware of the possible psychological, mental, social, and /or emotional needs of the athlete leading to overtraining syndrome, resulting in injury. Liability is a concern, since there is the possibility for a malpractice lawsuit for improper use of Sport Psychology / Mental Conditioning application. NSCA Personal Trainers (CPT)NSCA Certified Personal Trainers (CPT) will gain knowledge and skills can benefit from the same principals and applications that are listed above in the NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Coaches (CSCS) section.NSCA Certified Personal Trainers (CPT) will gain knowledge and skills in applying Sport Psychology Theories and Principles to various situations they encounter while training their clients. NSCA Certified Personal Trainers (CPT) can benefit from this SIG in that he/she will have a better understanding of the mental states of his/her clients, and have a better understanding of how to work with clients who have job stress, family issues, depression, burnout, etc. NSCA Certified Personal Trainers (CPT) will be better equipped to educate and train the general population as well as special populations, in addition to athletes.
