Providing animal care knowledge and guidance for staff and volunteers as well as ensuring operations are running effectively, efficiently and according to procedure.To support the Vet Nurse/Animal Care Team Leader as required by ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the animal centre and that Centre standards are maintained including ensuring all animals housed at the SPCA Dunedin Centre are provided with the five freedoms outlined in the Animal Welfare Act 1999. POSITION DESCRIPTIONKEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Leadership Duties The Feline Attendant/Weekend Team Leader will provide leadership support to the Weekend Team.Responds to Weekend Staff queries and concerns as necessary.Manage sick leave and any urgent staffing issues in a considerate and timely manner. Weekend staff are well supported as evidenced by feedback.The Vet Nurse/Animal Care Team Leader is kept informed in a timely manner of all relevant staff and animal welfare operational issues for which the Vet Nurse/Animal care Team Leader is accountable. Reports are completed to ensure legal obligations of the Animal Welfare Act 1999 are being met. Contribute as a part of the euthanasia and rehoming panel for all euthanasia decisions for animals in SPCA care.Ensure that the weekend staff have the appropriate support to carry out operational work effectively, accountably and safely.Ensure that weekend staff are focused on achieving the mission and operational priorities of the centre.Ensure all reporting (if required) is completed in a timely manner to the Vet Nurse/Animal Care Team Leader. This is to include but not limited to; staff timesheets, workload, staffing, statistics.2. Animal Care DutiesProvide appropriate hands-on care of all Felines in SPCA care when rostered to units.All animals are provided with the five freedoms outlined in the Animal Welfare Act 1999. Hands-on work is completed according to the protocols detailed in the Centre Manual and Animal Care and Cleaning Processes.Ensure steps are followed to isolate disease and limit spread. Ensuring units are maintained in a clean and tidy condition at all timesResponsible for processing all incoming animals for the Feline units when responsible for those units.Ensure the thorough assessment of all incoming felines at time of admission. This includes but is not limited to:Ultraviolet lampingFlea and Worm treatmentsNose – Tail examinationMicrochip scanningThe behavioural needs to these animals are actively met and maintained including adequate and appropriate enrichment. All units are clean and tidy with well stocked access to cleaning equipment and consumables. Units are safe for humans and animals and their integrity is upheld.Providing administration as required, of any veterinary treatments and is recorded in appropriate detail E.g. Antibiotics, Flea & worm treatments, microchipping etc. Veterinary Instruction is followed and Legislation is adhered toAiding in the in the care of pre and post-surgery animalsFoster DutiesCreate and maintain an appropriate, current and effective database of feline, canine, livestock and small animal fosterers.Be committed to ongoing recruitment and screening of fosterers with the aim of long term retention and sustainability. Ensure that fosterers have the appropriate support to carry out operational work effectively, accountably and safely. Ensure fosterers have the support, skill set and knowledge to perform the tasks required. Ensure the return of fostered animals to the centre and organise its process back into the centreWithin appropriate timeframe, facilitate the foster home and complete the agreements with the foster family. Provide any equipment and advice as needed.4 Education / Promotion of SPCA brandMembers of the public / animal owners & carers are consistently given good advice and appropriate information which seeks to improve or maintain welfare of animal(s), whilst maintaining the image of the society as a caring organisationPositive feedback regarding SPCA is consistently received where anticipated.SPCA ‘brand’ is protected and promoted at all times.5 Personal and Animal Attendant Staff Continuing EducationEducation opportunities are sought proactively for yourself. Development requirements are signalled in advance to the Operations petence and skill level is maintained to perform role(s) to highest ability.Meets objectives set at annual performance review.6 Actively contributes to Health & Safety Ensures that a safe and healthy working environment is maintained at all plies with Health and Safety legislation and regulations.Takes responsibility for your own health and safety and ensures no action or inaction on your own part harms others in the workplace.Contributes towards the development and implementation of policies and procedures that ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act (2015).Is aware of and can identify hazards and risks to which the organisation may be exposed and takes appropriate action accordingly.
