Articulating Craft

The Arts Center Gallery at Nazareth College

4245 East Avenue, Rochester, New York

January 25-March 1

Theme

The Arts Center Gallery at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York is calling all U.S. artists whose work falls under the broad umbrella of "contemporary craft." The studio craft movement has been in constant evolution and has increasingly captured the attention of art critics, curators, and collectors from Beijing to Copenhagen, New York to San Francisco. A new generation of artists are routinely pushing the boundaries of materials and concept by further commenting on social and political issues, exploring new technologies, techniques, and aesthetics, and crossing disciplinary borders. Through these interventions and others, the meaning, prevalence, and conceptual and contextual depths of craft have come to take on a life of their own, populating galleries, museums, publications, digital exhibitions, and other venues across the established art world.

We are inviting craft makers and artists to contribute to this ever-evolving dialogue by submitting work that reflects their interpretation of what contemporary craft looks like today, and what it might look like tomorrow. Rather than limiting artists and makers to a narrow theme, or restricting submissions by defining what contemporary craft is or should be, we seek work that reflects the craft tradition and which is not afraid to push boundaries by being inventive in process, technique, and material. By Articulating Craft in this way, we hope to feature works across various media to showcase what this new generation of makers is doing with their work, whether functional or sculptural, and to create a space for advancing the public's awareness and appreciation of this diverse and expanding movement.
