Catoosa County Vision: CCPS will be a nationally recognized learning community

whose graduates are prepared for tomorrow’s challenges.

RHS Mission: To empower our students with academic excellence

Course Description: American Literature and Composition focuses on a

study of American literature, highlighting

trends, themes, and issues that have occurred through-

out history. Students should come to understand that

American literature reflects the impact of social,

political, and philosophical ideas and is, therefore,

significant beyond any entertainment value it may

offer. The curriculum is created with Georgia

Common Core Performance Standards as its frame

work. These standards are designed to prepare students

for college and work readiness. (These standards may be

accessed at doe.k12.ga.us.) Student success

in meeting these standards is measured by an

end of course test mandated by the State.

Required Materials: Students should secure notebook paper, a three-ring

binder, blue or black ink pens (no other colors accepted

on work to be turned in), pencils, lined index cards, and

occasional access to a computer with Microsoft Word

and a printer.

Homework: American literature texts will be maintained in the class-

room, but students should expect some homework several

times each week. This frequently will be vocabulary

review, independent reading, and writing or revising

compositions. All assignments will have adequate allotted

time for completion; therefore, any work turned in late

should be accompanied with an explanation of extenuating

circumstances.

Outside Reading: Students are expected to engage in independent reading

in addition to in class reading. Library time is provided

for students to select materials. Students are expected to

quickly clear any financial obligations to the library so

that they are able to use the privilege of checking out

books.

Writing Portfolio: Students will be required to produce a variety of writing

samples used to measure achievement. These samples are

to be maintained in the writing portfolio in the classroom.

Make-up Work: All make-up work is the responsibility of the student

and must be completed in accordance with the policies

set forth by the Catoosa County Board of Education

(see handbook).

Grading Specifics: American Literature and Composition End of Course

Test=15% of total semester grade

Tests/Major Compositions/Group Projects=50%

Quizzes/Daily Work/Participation=50%

Parent Notification: Parents have access to Infinite Campus, which serves

as an avenue for “constant contact” between teacher and parent. It is imperative that parents have access to this valuable resource. In addition, parents are free to e-mail us, using the addresses on the first page of this syllabus.

Attendance: Students are expected to be present each day. It is the

parent/guardian responsibility to see that students

are in class each day. Achievement and success in the

class are unlikely without extremely regular

attendance.

Instructional Supply Fee The English Department is asking each student to

contribute a $3.00 instructional supply fee. We can

accept cash or checks made out to RHS. An electronic

receipt, which you may print, will be issued through

Infinite Campus/Parent Portal.
