[Pages:9]Tri-City Day School FAMILY NEWS LETTER
September 2013
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 2013-14 school year! We have "hit the ground running" as usual and are off to a great start of the year! As usual, we do have a few new faces around Tri-City. Trisha Greenlee took over Nichole Burns' position as school secretary. Nichole took a job as an accounting assistant at a business in Wichita. We are excited to welcome Trisha who has several years' experience as a Behavior Technician in a program at Freeman Elementary. Also joining us this year is NaKita Moore, social work intern, from Wichita State University. Emily Long is joining us on a temporary basis as she will be filling in for Mrs. A until she returns in probably early December. We welcome these new staff to the Tri-City family and wish them the best in the upcoming year!
Thank you to everyone who braved the weather on August 13 to join us for Open House. Despite all of the rain and street flooding, we had an outstanding turn out for the evening. We were even joined by some of our recent graduates and their families!
We will also continue to coordinate with community service agencies such as COMCARE, MHA and Behavior Link to provide additional support to the students at Tri-City. Please make sure that you have signed appropriate releases with us and your extra service providers so that we are able to exchange information with them as we plan for your child's school year.
Please remember that you are an important member of your child's educational team and we welcome your input. Please feel free to contact us at Tri-City at 554-2324.
Wishing you well,
Gina
REMINDER
Absences related to appointments away from the building during the school day will only be excused if a parent or guardian provides the school with verification/documentation of the reason why the student was absent from school on a specific date.
If requested, the service provider at the agency you are visiting will provide you with documentation to verify your child's appointment. Thank you for your cooperation!
Lunch Reminders Just a reminder, please be sure your child has money on his/her breakfast/lunch account. Breakfast and lunch prices are as follows:
Breakfast $1.15 per day (second breakfast an additional $1.50) Reduced breakfast $.30 Elementary lunch $1.95 per day * Middle School lunch $2.15 per day * High School lunch $2.30 per day * Reduced lunch $.40 per day *
*ALL second lunches whether first lunch is free, reduced or full price are an additional $3.00
We have been advised that if your child does not have money on his/her account, he/she will receive cereal and milk for lunch. This will only be made available three times during the entire school year. After that, he/she will not receive a school lunch until the account is brought current. Low balance letters will not be sent home this year. If you would like to inquire about the balance on your child's account you may call the Haysville West Middle School cafeteria at 554-2377. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
My Lunch Money
Parents and guardians of Tri-City students from all three districts are now able to utilize the program to keep track of lunch balances and make payments on your child's lunch account. To utilize this tool, go to and have your child's district identification number. If you do not know what your child's identification number is, you may call Trisha at 554-2324 and she will be able to give it to you.
This program will allow you to check your child's current lunch balance and set up automatic payments. If you have any difficulties setting this up, you may call Gina at 554-2324 for assistance.
STATE FAIR FIELD TRIP The first field trip of the year will be to the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson on Monday, September 9. A student will be ineligible for this field trip if they have a write up that requires he/she to be in the Affective/ISS Room or the staff has concerns about a student's ability to follow directions. Students who transition to their base schools for one half day or more will not be able to attend the outing so that they do not miss class at their base school. The cost for the day is $1.00 plus a sack lunch. Students will not be allowed to ride rides or play midway games while on this trip but may bring money for a snack. Please watch for your child's permission slip. Thanks!
Medication Checks Nancy Ballinger with COMCARE, will again be available for medication checks at Tri-City. These visits will be once a month. The next visit for this school year will be September 18. If you would like more information regarding setting up an appointment for your child's medication check at Tri-City, you may contact Cindy Knight, Tri-City Day School R.N., at 554-2324 for more information.

Remember that students must be in good standing both academically and behaviorally to attend school outings.
Tri-City Security
Tri-City is a secured facility. When you arrive to pick up your child during the school day, please press the intercom button located on the left, or west side of the doors.
You will be greeted by the office staff and the door will be released to allow your entry into the building. It is important that you contact us and let us know if someone other than yourself will be picking your child up from school. Things can be very hectic at the end of the school day and it is helpful to know ahead of time of any transportation changes. Thank you in advance for your help.
Bug Lady Assembly Thanks to a generous donation by one of our 2013 graduates, we will be having a very special assembly by the "bug lady" on Thursday, September 19, at 10:00 a.m. at Tri-City. She will be bringing a variety of animals and insects for her presentation which will be lively, entertaining and we will be learning a lot about how useful insects and "bugs" really are!

Helping Your Child in the Area of Mathematics
Support positive attitudes towards mathematics Let your child know that everyone can be successful in mathematics. This can be done by... ...encouraging your child to be persistent in working through problems; success will build confidence. Avoid negative comments about math such as, "I was never good at math." Praise effort not intelligence. Use words like I like how hard you are trying. Avoid saying things like you are smart. *From
HEALTHY CHOICES

Children who skip breakfast, often mistake hunger pains for a tummy ache. Eat foods from all five of the food groups. A helpful website for healthy eating is
Fun Facts
Did you Know...
o The largest high school in America has over 8000 students. It is Morton High School in Berwyn-Cicero, Ill. The East Campus has over 6,000 students, and it is a co-op high school.
o Even though Thomas Jefferson was all for free public education, and tried to promote it, only America's wealthy were able to get an elementary school education until the 1840s when Horace Mann and Henry Barnard and other reformers tried to get tax-funded schools. They did this because they thought that if they had schools paid for by taxes, more people would attend, and this spread of education would help produce better citizens, unite the societies, and prevent much crime and poverty. It turns out that in a large part they were right.
o High school was not really a part of school until the 1930s. Before that most Americans only completed eight years of school. Why was that and what changed it? Well, during the Great Depression, there were many communities that had little work to offer, and they figure that keeping teenagers in the classrooms would keep them out of the work force, thus reducing the competition for many adults who required higher pay than a teen would.
