MONTGOMERY COLLEGEOffice of Advancement and Community Engagement?April 18, 2016MEMORANDUMTo:Montgomery College Community From:Karla Silvestre, Director of Community EngagementSubject:Interpretation and Translation Services at Montgomery College?According to the 2014 American Community Survey, 15 percent of Montgomery County residents are “limited English proficient” or speak English less than “very well.” Montgomery College is dedicated to providing high quality educational services for all students, faculty, staff and residents in our county and to removing language barriers to College services. The College has contracted with Schreiber Translations, Inc., to offer in-person interpretation services as well as written translation services for many languages. This service can be used to translate documents like brochures and flyers into multiple spoken languages or to bring in-person interpreters to a College event. Before placing a request, please obtain approval from your departmental supervisor. The Office of Community Engagement will approve requests based on available funding and will prioritize activities that have a demonstrated history of need for translation/interpretation. Oral Interpretation RequestsTo request oral interpretation, e-mail request.interpreter@montgomerycollege.edu. Indicate the type of oral interpretation needed, such as simultaneous (using headsets) or consecutive (an interpreter interprets after the speaker has finished a sentence or phrase). Also, provide pertinent details such as:Event locationDateNumber of people expected to attend Number of people (approximate) who will need interpretationPlease note that simultaneous interpretation includes headsets for up to 25 people.Minimum lead time for interpretation services is typically two weeks. Approved requests will be paid for by the Office of Community Engagement. Last-minute requests may not be accommodated.Written Translation RequestsWritten translation requests for College publications will be managed through the Office of Communications. To request written translation assistance, submit a communications request to the Office of Communications at montgomerycollege.edu/communicationsrequest. You will then be contacted by a project manager in the Office of Communications to discuss details of your request.Minimum lead-time for a written translation need is typically three weeks. Approved requests will be paid for by the Office of Community Engagement. Last-minute requests may not be accommodated.Services Available at the College Not Covered HereAmerican Sign Language Interpreters should still be requested through the Office of Disability Services. Over-the-phone interpretation is also available at the College. Please contact Natalie Thompson, response center manager, for more information on over-the-phone interpretation.
