Next board meeting:April 13, 2017AnnouncementsThe AzNA Chapter 30 members’ meeting convened at 5:30 p.m. at the University of Phoenix, Tempe, AZ with all board members present, led by President Kathy Wruk. Motion made by Lynn Untermeyer to approve minutes from February board meeting. Seconded by Sarah Locke. Motion carried. UOP LPN-to-BSN students in attendance. Aside from the board members, presenters, and UOP students, there were 3 other AzNA members in attendance. Kathy Wruk updated group on current bills in legislation. Handout provided from AzNA with summaries of SB1133: Nurse Practitioners/Certified Nurse Midwives, and SB 1336: Nurse Anesthetists; prescribing authority; limitations.Guest Speaker: Pat Mews, MHA, RN, CNOR, Surgical ConsultantTopic: “Power of Nursing”Pat has served 50 years in the Operating Room (OR). PowerPoint presentation reviewed the history of nursing from Florence Nightingale as a pioneer of sanitation in the OR, accountability, and fostering a culture of ownership, to Clara Barton starting the Red Cross. The history of AzNA was reviewed, starting in 1921. Pat recommends the book We Band of Angels. Pat further discussed healthcare system challenges, which has been more of a “sick care program”, and NPs have been covering the provider shortage and the rising healthcare costs. Evidence-based care, HCAHPS, value-based purchasing, re-admissions, and hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) were also discussed. Patient-centered care has been hindered due to lack of communication but has been improved with nurse coordination. “Never events” include: objects left in the body from surgery, air embolism, blood incompatibility, CAUTIs, pressure ulcers, vascular catheter-associated infections, surgical site infections, hospital injuries (burns, falls). Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is not paying for hospital errors. RNs are fundamental to patient-centered models which include: ACOs, Transitional Care Models, PCMH, and nurse-managed health clinics. The IOM report was discussed with emphasis on increasing leadership in boardrooms, including membership on boards outside of the nursing arena. Nurse leaders: increased numbers of nursing leaders leads to increased patient safety. Some of the influential nursing leaders were discussed. Marla Weston – most influential; Pamela Cipriano – current ANA President; Robin Schaeffer – Executive Director of AzNA. In closing: reflect and renew, find your passion. At the end of Pat’s presentation, she was presented with a card signed by the board members and recognized for receiving the AORN Outstanding Mentorship Award 2017.Door PrizesSubway Gift Card – Karen Holt (UOP Student Winner); Game Changer book – Megan Kirschner; Hydro Bottle – Sarah Locke; Outback gift Card – AngieDuring the break time, Kathy Wruk encouraged a stretch break and spoke on the ANA Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation initiative for nurses’ week this year. She also updated the group on the Renewal Retreat for Nurses.Guest Speaker: Megan Kirschner, BSN, RNMegan, daughter of board VP, Robin Kirschner, presented on an evidence-based project she completed, in which she had the opportunity to present in China. Megan used Jean Watson’s theory as a background to study the use of hand massage with essential oils as a stress reliever for ICU nurses. The results of the mixed methods study were statistically significant for stress reduction, and were aligned with the supporting research. Review of the evidence-based process was also discussed. Megan submitted her abstract to present at the Evidence Based Practice 2016 Global Human Caring Conference in China and her abstract was accepted. Megan discussed her trip and her experience touring the local hospitals. Megan was surprised that the hospitals did not integrate traditional and Western medicine, but rather they were separate hospitals.
