Ancient China Project Specifics

Chinese Zodiac- Olivia and Calyn:

What are the origins of the Chinese Zodiac? What signs are there? How seriously to Chinese take these signs? What sign are we under this year? What sign are you and your classmates, and what characteristics come with this sign? What sorts of festivals or traditions are associated with the Zodiac in China?

Philosophers and Thinkers- Patrick and Christian:

What are the main beliefs of Confucius and Confucianism? What impact has Confucianism had on Chinese culture to this day? What is Daoism and who developed it? What is legalism? How are these three belief systems similar, and different? How do they seek to create an orderly society in different ways? Which one is best? Why?

Architecture and Inventions- Ally, Ethan M. and Ethan C.:

What sort of buildings were built in Ancient China? Why do they have curved roofs? What sort of purpose do these buildings serve? Any information you can give us about the buildings is great, especially high quality pictures. As for inventions, what major inventions happened in Ancient China? How did these inventions improve living standards? How did they change society? Describe the inventions. Be sure to show several pictures.

The Silk Road and the Chinese Economy- Brayden and Jacob:

What is the Silk Road? When was it developed? What sorts of items were shipped on the Silk Road? What major civilizations traded on this road? What impact did the Silk Road have on China? What was it like to travel the Silk Road? When and why did the Silk Road close? How else did the Chinese use and make money? What did their currency look like? Be sure to have lots of pictures and maps throughout the presentation. See my website for a link to

Farming techniques and food- Daniel, Kaleb, and Hunter:

What farming techniques did the Ancient Chinese come up with that improved how they farmed? Show pictures from the time period of these inventions or techniques. What kinds of foods did people eat in Ancient China, and how is that different than what we think of Chinese food today? Why were chopsticks invented? What other fun facts are there about Chinese food that we don’t know?

Building the Great Wall of China- Miranda, Danny, Kenneth:

Why was the Great Wall built, and when did construction begin? Where was it built? How did the original version of the wall look different than the version we see today? What were the lives of the workers like who built the wall? How did they actually build it? Did it work? In what ways was it effective, and how did it fail? See my site for a link to information. Be sure to include maps, diagrams, and plenty of good pictures.

Social Class/ Caste System of China- Ben, Taylor, Gretchen, and Paige:

You have the biggest group, so you will have the biggest project. Have each person do an explanation of what life was like for each of the social groups in Ancient China. These groups include, Emperors/Nobles, Peasants, Artisans, Merchants/Slaves. The class should have a good idea what life was like as a member of each of these groups. You should compare how the caste system in India, being reinforces by Hinduism, is similar to the social system in China, being reinforced by Confucianism. Be sure to have lots of pictures, charts, etc.

Writing and Paper-Making- Rylie and Kyle:

Explain how the Ancient Chinese developed their system of writing. How do they write? What do they usually write about? What do they write on? How was paper created in ancient China? Why is writing considered important in ancient China? Be sure to have a sentence written in Chinese that you can explain, showing the different ideographs and pictographs.
