Graduate Program in Religion: New Testament TrackDemonstrating Competency in Greek and Hebrew I. Rationale: The requirements for the Ph.D. in New Testament include the following:“Students are expected to have or develop excellent biblical Hebrew and ancient Greek, and to demonstrate competency in both languages.” According to the general requirements for the Program, the “[required ancient and modern] languages must be completed before taking the doctoral preliminary examination.”The following guidelines seek to maintain the program’s historically high standards of excellence for Hebrew and Greek while making it possible for students to move on to prelims as expeditiously as warranted.II. Definitions: “Excellent” competence in Hebrew is understood to mean proficiency at a level that would earn an “A-” in REL 607 / OLDTEST 860: Hebrew Prose Narrative. This is the third of three semesters of graduate level Hebrew. “Excellent” competence in Greek is understood to mean proficiency at a level that would earn an “A-” in NEWTEST 959: Advanced Greek. III. Policy:Students may demonstrate an “excellent” command of each of the required ancient languages in one of three ways:1. For Hebrew: by passing the examination of REL 607 / OLDTEST 860 (or equivalent) with a grade of at least A-. For Greek: by passing the examination of NEWTEST 959 (or equivalent) with a grade of at least A-.2. By passing an oral or written examination, administered by a person or persons assigned to this role by agreement of the faculty of the track, a pass being equivalent to achieving, for Hebrew, an A- in REL 607 / OLDTEST 860 (or equivalent); and, for Greek, an A- in NEWTEST 959 (or equivalent).3. By successful completion of an upper-level course requiring intensive engagement with primary sources in the relevant ancient language. The instructor will certify to the track convener in writing that the student has demonstrated in his or her coursework an “excellent” level of competence in the language (as defined in Section II. above). ................
