Welcome to Mrs. Gerber’s Gifted Resource Class

November, 2017

Gifted Education

Important Information

• Progress Reports for Gifted: With this new model for Gifted Resource we do not have a “reporting system” to let you know how your student is performing in gifted resource. I am currently working on a Gifted Resource Report Card. I will have this ready in January. In the meantime, please let me know if you have suggestions or questions.

• Units of Study: Each time a grade level begins a new unit of study I send home information regarding what we are studying and why. Please ask your child questions about what they are learning in gifted resource class.

• Gifted Testing: There are several times during the year when I will not meet with the students due to testing. Part of my job is identifying and testing new students into the gifted program. This will usually occur in November and March.

Welcome to Mrs. Gerber’s Gifted Resource Class Newsletter

Hello everyone! I want to take a minute an update you on what is and has been happening in Gifted Education. As you know, we are working on expanding services to our gifted education students. In the past, gifted students were only served through innovation stations (about 40 minutes, 4 times a week and we were limited in the units of study we could provide for students because of the time factor. We are always looking to improve our services and provide a deeper level of learning for all our students at Hickory Flat.

Here are the changes we have made this year to Gifted Education.

• Cluster grouping: All gifted students are clustered together with a teacher who is certified in gifted education. This allows for greater differentiation, depth and complexity in lessons and content.

• Resource: Students are now served though a gifted resource pull out program. I pull each grade level one day per week and spend most of the day (except for lunch and Innovation stations) with the students. This allows me to work on several different units of study /experiences that students would not normally have the opportunity to be exposed to in the regular education class.

1st Grade: Students just completed a unit involving Design Thinking to create/design the Ultimate Animal.

Students researched various animals and the function of their external parts. From this they had to determine which external parts they felt made that animal more adaptable to any environment. Students could choose up to 4 different external parts from various animals to place on their own design. Students gave critical feedback to each other in order to make their design better. Students created portraits, clay models, and narratives describing their animal and its habitat.

Above: Critical Friends: Students giving feedback/advice to one another on their designs. This is how they improve their ideas/designs.

2ndGrade: Students investigated how forces and motion are an integral part of our lives. Their science investigations allowed them to explore different types of motion and how different variables like speed, friction, weight, and size can affect an object’s motion. Students built chain reaction machines to use their knowledge on how energy can be stored (potential energy) and transferred.

Algebraic Thinking

The 2nd and 3rd grade students are learning algebra. Using a program called “Hands on Equations”, students will learn how to solve algebraic equations and develop a concrete foundation for algebra. Hands on equations uses a visual and kinesthetic instructional approach and students love learning math this way!

Students in 3rd 4th, and 5th grade have created their plans for interactive outdoor learning stations for our school nature trail. We recently went on a field trip to Dauset Trails Nature Center, where the experts helped students understand and identify various resources they can utilize on our trail. We are in the process of writing grants to obtain funds to implement the student plans for the learning stations. Hopefully we can begin in the spring.

Currently our 4th and 5th graders are working on a Future Problem Solving Challenge involving Pandemics. We will take a trip to the CDC in December 5th.

3rd, 4th and 5th grade Students are also working on a stem inspired project creating a Rube Goldberg Machine. We are just getting starting with this unit but I am sure the students will be creative engineers with this unit.
