Build a Cell: Model Plant and Animal Cells

Build a Cell: Model Plant and Animal Cells

Student Project

[pic]

In this project, students will build a model of a plant or animal cell using common household or craft items. This activity will be completed at home. Students will also create a Facebook page to explain their cell.

Directions- Part 1:

1. Choose to make a plant or animal cell. (You are choosing ONLY ONE)

2. Go home and look around the house, what materials might you use?

3. Draw a rough sketch of your cell and label it with the materials you plan to use for each cell structure.

4. Construct your cell! Make sure to include all of the appropriate cell structures (see the charts below)

5. Label each part of your cell model.

Directions – Part 2:

6. Create a Facebook page for your cell – on a large piece of paper or poster board. Follow the directions below.

7. Come up with a clever name for your cell.

8. Design your Facebook page background on your poster board with the following criteria.

(DRAW OUT THE BACKGROUND OF THE FACEBOOK PAGE BEFORE YOU GET STARTED ON THE INFORMATION PORTION OF THIS ASSIGNMENT!)

a. Create the blue Facebook banner at the top of your poster. It should include the word “Facebook”, the clever name you created for your cell, and the words Home and Logout. (We want it to look real!)

b. Create a box to place your cell’s photo.

c. Create a “Status Box”. Don’t write anything in it yet! Include words in black that say “Update Status”, “Add a Photo” and “Ask a Question”. These are all things that will help make your Facebook page look authentic!

d. Create a spot for Location, About, Interests and a Friends section. Leave space just like the example shows. You will fill these spaces in soon.

e. Create a “Wall” section. Make this section look JUST LIKE the sample shows.

9. Once you have the background set up, you need to add a picture of your cell. You may either draw your cell in your photo box, or you may paste a printed photo in the box.

10. Put a “Status” in your status box. Your status needs to have something to do with your cell’s functions (or what it does).

11. Fill out the cell’s location. Is it inside of an animal? Plant? What type of animal? What type of plant? Your location should answer all of these questions.

12. Fill out the “About” section. Tell me about your cell. What does it do?

13. Fill out the “Interest” section. Think about its functions.

14. In the white box where it says “Write something” - write another status that has something to do with your cell. It should be different from the status that you put in your status box.

15. Choose at least 3 organelles that are found in your cell. Draw what they look like in your “Friends” photo boxes.

16. Have your “Friends” write on your cell’s wall. Your “Friends” posts should include a smaller picture of the organelle, the organelle’s name and you should write something on your cell’s wall that has something to do with THEIR function. For example, if one of your friends is chloroplast, you would write something such as “I love sunlight showers! All I do is photosynthesize!”
